Hi all,

My father is currently considering the Nimbus 42 Nova and have been out to see two different boats now. One with shafts and another with stern drives. Both of the boats were manufactured in 2007/08 and both have Volvo D6 370hp engines.

We know the brand quite well but we haven't had a chance to speak with any former (impartial) owners yet. If any of you have experience with the boat we would much appreciate any advice, tips/tricks or things to look out for in general. With regards to the engines we would also very much like to know more if anyone is sitting with any particular good-to-know info.

Other comments / owner experiences would definitely be appreciated as well. Many thanks.

Not an owner of the 42 but have been an owner of a 27
Last year I looked at the Nova 42 in depth
Sea trialed one and crawled over three more
Went to Holland to see three and where I did a sea trial
I would only consider shafts, that is for certain
I also boarded all that Offshore Powerboats had at the Southampton boat show
What I like about the model is the way it 'flows' from stem to stern
IE, its all on one level and two 'wheelhouse' doors for ease when single handed
I also contacted by PM , the owner of the same model who posted on here about His adventures with one
I had a very good reply from Him
Thanks again if you read this Sir!
What I could not get my head around
After asking the question to Nimbus (the factory) and 'Nimbus' at the Show plus the aformentioned fellow forumite
The layout and format of the transom door
The 'doors' in effect are centrally fitted at said area and are constructed of a 'glass' of some kind with a steel framework
Nothing wrong with that, however there is no 'lip' of any sort, even when they are shut to stop water washing into the cockpit area and leaking/dripping into the engine bay
This happened on the sea trial on quite calm day on an inland sea in Holland
On decelleration , ie when slowing down rather quickly
I had to avert a crazy guy in a dinghy saily thing!!!
There is no protection aft even with the doors shut to stop a stern wave washing into the cockpit!
This is the only Nimbus model with this configuration
OK, 9 times out of 10 etc the vessel will beat the stern wave, I get that
My concerns where that should there be a breakdown or a problem whilst at sea the vessel could be exposed
However even if this situation might not be life threatening there is/was still the question ref sea water swilling about in that area it can leak through to the engine bay
The 43 I think has larger diameter scuppers and a modified strainer at deck level
Looking at the current range, you will notice that the transom door access area is different
The bathing platforms are not flush to the deck
Therfore the concerns I mention are not relevant
I love the brand, don't get me wrong
The back up from Offshore and the Factory is second to none
The build quality in its class is second to none also imho
My old Nimbus was my 7 th boat so i have some experience at this lark!
I am still looking, the 42 is a Planing hull, nothing wrong with that
However I think a semi displacement would fit the needs we have better
Motorboat searching can be interesting but frustrating to boot!
A weekend or two ago found us in South wales sea trialling a Nelson
Last weekend darn sarf doing similar with a Grand Banks
The search goes on!
A 380 or a Storebro are still an attraction
It's a personal thing, I just dont like outdrives
That is a thread/ debate on it's own!
So I will end this now before we have a 'sterdrive v outdrive debate or thread drift!
I hope I have helped but not hindered
K!
