Nice or Antibes

Business meeting in Antibes next week so flying to Nice and staying one night.

Any recommendations on where to stay? Antibes or Nice? Close to the port in Antibes preferred.

No question, Antibes vmb

Out of season not so many places open though. One good all-year is the JOSSE by Illette (so away from the harbour) in the Michelin, excellent breakfast but ? no restaurant. Easy to get a good dinner in the old town ( 5 or so in the Mich) or at the ?sp Romarin 80yds away at Illette roundabout.

Alternatively, wait till the hexperts tcm + Learner respond.

erm, dunno, never stayedin an hotel in antibes, always in the boat. Look for somewhere in the "vieille ville" in Michelin, the red book, havnae gottit on me. . Failing that, the crew house is a dead cheap dosshouse for a visitng ozzie deckhandss. In nice, the westminster is good, negresco a bit knackered. In antibes eat out at "les Mures" which is fab.

Antibes is much nicer imho, but my knowledge of the place is about 15 years out of date so I don't know about places to stay. There used to be a really nice hotel on the waterfront round the corner in Juan les Pins but, again, it's probably either (a) gorn or (b) ridiculously expensive. This is really helpful, isn't it?

Antibes is better because of:

Musee Picasso
Old Town
Lots of nice bars/restaurants
Lack of backstreet pimperies, "horizontales" etc. I understand these to be a feature of certain areas of Nice, though I don't have first hand knowledge, you understand
Port Vauban, which is full of very expensive and mouthwatering boats. Including something called a Leopard 23, apparently
View towards Fort Carre
etc.

Beats Nice into a cocked hat.

Urrghh, live there, so not very good on hotels !!

If meeting in Antibes stay there...no question ...eating where you will..Don Cesar is a good hotel as is Imperial Garoupe ( or the Eden Roc by repute !!!!) , however none of them in Port/Central Antibes....where is your meeting?

Interesting tcm, will try and get into the Mures again. Tried twice in Oct and fully booked.

Usually go at least once to the Jarre (N along the wall) - Italian slant on fine food, excellent welcome, especially fine beef fillet and truly stunning "OTT" marc, have to book. In the red book only open in season. Fortunately, now known there but never less than excellent meal/service etc

Eden Roc is obviously the place, but not near Antibes port. Come to think of it, there are no fab hotels by Antibes port. The corporate 4/5 star marble/fountain lobby stuff is a mile back in Juan Les Pins. There's a Meridien there, and Ambassadeure (sp?) right by the convention centre (is that where you're going?)

Thanks for all the tips.

I'm meeting a customer on his motor yacht in the port. Is TCM's boat really there or am I confused?

Looks like I'll be at a loose end Sunday evening so will try one of the recommended joints.

Is it safe to leave the hotel until I arrive, late afternoon, or should I book ahead?

Yes TCM's boat is normally there.... I think he's bringing it from its current home up an Italian ditch, this weekend, so it should be there if you're going next weekend.

Depends where you end up as to booking or not...if you go Eden Roc or Don Cesar, I think (jfm/tcm/jfr??) both have complimentry limos/cabs from Nice Airport which is good. Hotels will not be full...will be emptyish, but some are closed ...rates in France generally better if booked in advance as opposed to on the day unless you are either fluent in French or rude....I qualify

..Don't bother hiring a car use taxis prbably €35-40 to Cap d'Antibes...hotel - town insignificant...

our boaty is normally there, but not this weekend nor next - it's still in italy moving out monday 16th so, not there.

Always nicer to book inadvance, imho, they don't much like the unannounced-ness of walking off the street. Bet some agency of summink can get places dead cheap if you're paying.

Went there last week and it changed hands Oct 02.

Regret we cannot recommend it any more. I suppose the food is quite OK by French standards but just not special any more.

It must be the Viuex Mures then.

A few years ago we have a fab holiday in a little place called the "Hotel Baie Doree", as i recall just behind the Eden Roc with its feet in the water. They have a web site.
