Well I'm finally a "newbie" . I'v been reading the forums for a while but have not had the courage to post myself , seems a bit aggressive at times .
However I'v just bought my first BIG yacht ( graduated from dinghies) a folk boat.
I think Im out of my league at the moment with it but the guys at the yard are very helpful. Soooooooo be gentle with me as i have many questions to ask.
At the moment she has an inboard stewart turner engine which needs sorting out (keeps cutting out when hot) understand you can still get spares for these does anyone know of the address , everyone says replace it ! can't afford that at the moment as much more needs doing.
Also it has a few broken frames so propose to repair/replace them myself any advice would be helpful .I have been advised to laminate new frames. Is this an easy job to do as I feel I could do it myself rather than pay the yard to put new bent frames?
Thanks for any advice

Jane

Re: welcome

jane
folk boat. lovely

here is advice mixed with lots of inane banter (lots of it from me i hasten to admit) so some of the techies avoid this forum
we are a rteally friendly bunch, hell they tolerate me

so if you have a really urgent specific problem that is really technical go to PBO forum
is the engine fresh water cooled cannot i thought some of the early folk boats had that?
anyway there is lots of helpful advice here

on old boats i think mirelle is one of the resident experts so if this thread of yours does not cross mirelles path try sending mirelle a pm. if you need help o pm's i can do that. other than that hope you get lots of fun out the forum
best of luck

RWelcome aboard

Hello, My Lady,

Welcome to the madhouse.

So, you have already discovered the joys of Stuart Turner ownership. I have tried to find a reference for spares but couldn't lay hands on it. There is at least one company dealing with them. As SInbad says, I am sure a post on the PBO site will yield results. Ultimately I would recommend replacement, but a there is no reason why a properly repaired ST shouldn't give good service. A fully restored one can be a joy (for a while).

Alternatively, depending on your sailing and the area, you might consider the stop gap solution of fitting an outboard bracket and using a cheap(er) four stroke motor of around 6 or 8hp. It would not suit if you plan a lot of motoring or have to fight strong tides to and from the mooring, but for a nudge on to the mooring or into the marina it might serve.

Laminating and replacing frames is not for the feint hearted - not impossible, but you need to be a bit handy with wood and maybe have a steam box readily available. Unless you have done this sort of thing before I would recommend a yard.

Welcome!
If you want to know about stewart turner I am your man! What engine is it? I have spent the last two years learning about them the hard way. (floating about in the Wash without any power!)
I am also thinking about looking for a Folkboat (talk about a glutton for punishment)
Fairways marine is the place for the spares, 01621852866, but best to talk to other owners for technical advice.
Glad to help if I can.
Chris

FB engines

Few things, apart from sailing on the same day as Jimi, ruin the pleasure of sailing quite like an unreliable engine.

There's a big fleet of keenly raced FBs in Lymington. The commonest engine solution seems to be an outboard, probably for a good reason (like there's not much space in a Folkie for an inboard). They're a friendly bunch, except when racing, so why not ask them if you are ever down that way. Most of them seem to be in Lymington yacht haven.

Maybe your short-term solution is to keep old Stewart going somehow without spending real dosh on him, while you save some beer vouchers for a decent outboard.

BTW, there are usually good deals on outbords at boat shows.

Spare plugs

Stuart Turners do cut out when hot, and certainly hate restarting until they've cooled right down. The usual trick is to keep a couple of spare sets of cold plugs and an old cloth to stop you burning yourself when you change them on a hot engine.

Having said that, I have never been so pleased as when I stopped using STs and switched to diesel.

Good luck and enjoy the beautiful boat.

.. there's a unique pleasure in getting a lump of obstinate iron to work and if you have both time and skill ......

I did sail on a boat with an ST for 3 yrs and it was reliable. There seems to be a few ST's (all seized, coincidentally) for £30-50 on google ....

Welcome! You might get better advice, on the clkassic or PBO sites on this forum, as for frames, not a job for an amatuer, you need some fairly good shipwright skills to do it properly and you need to do it properly, good luck and again welcome to the forums.

Welcome! - Lucky you. Nice boat. You will probably need help with the ribs. There are still a few small yards with the expertise in wood who may be a lot cheaper than the bigger ones. Where are you based?

As for the engine - not so lucky. In days of yore my father had one. It spent more time in bits or waiting for them than the boat. I would agree with those who advise an alternative!

Welcome my Lady!

It can seem aggresive at times but you ususally end up reading all those posts by people who've annoyed you! So don't worry about it - it's good to have new blood.

Re: digs at newbies

Let jimi speak for himself! The digs from me are borne from a combination of long-standing grudges, barely-controlled hatred and boiling anger, so DON'T imagine that they are lighthearted because I really mean them very nastily indeed.

hi.

Not a clue about your boat but just wait till yerv ripped yer knuckles trying to fix the boat, or wasted a load of money and it's still a bit busted - you will soon be promoted from Newbie to Bewildered, and then i think the next stage is Unexpectedly Skint, then Narked and Dangerous, and I think Cynic comes soon after the first season.

happy boating

er, are you male or female? Not that it matters, of course. Well, yes it does, to you obviously i mean maybe maybe not er um er um

welcome anyway.

Re: Errrrr....

Typical of the winter yorkshire person .. get sewn into their red flannels in October and cut out in March ... sex in the winter is irrelevant

Hi and welcome to the OCC. No not Ocean Cruising Club, the Obsessed Cynics Club, or is it Obstinate or maybe Obnoxious.

And I'm not at all aggressive, just so long as you agree with absolutely everything I say. The rest of them are the ones to watch.

Nice boat, shame about the Stuart Turner! Actually I had a friend, (see I do have some), sadly now dead who rebuilt the ST 8HP or 10HP in his Macwester 26. The key I seem to remember was there was only one grade of Champion spark plug that kept it running when hot, plus the exhaust system must have no back pressure, he had much of his cleaned with caustic somewhere I recall, plus he cooked the silencer on a bonfire to remove the burnt on carbon. All very high tech. stuff. On a FB though you could have the dinghy outboard maybe double as a backup with a suitable swing arm bracket?

So there you have it, us CLASSIC boat owners must stick together!
