I have just bought a Lofrans royal manual windlass and I am in the process of fitting it.

I am not clear about the arangement for the anchor chain to go through the deck. Previously the anchor chain went through a hawse pipe but I cannot see how I can use that now as it will interfere with the free fall of the chain into the chain locker.

I need to cut a new hole in the top of the chain locker so the chain falls vertically from the gipsy. My question is - what arragement can I now use to prevent run off water from the foredeck entering the hole and the chain locker.

Most modern boats have a balsa sandwich deck. Mine has - so I chose to put the largest bronze skin fitting I could find through the deck under the windlass so that no water could enter the sandwich. It has worked well, and no great volume of sea water has so far entered the locker.

My Lofrans has got a sort of hawse pipe built into it anyway ie the chain has done a 180 and is running forward when it starts to go downwards through the deck

I put a bronze skin fitting through which I got from ASAP it has a blanking plug for when not in ise

I squash a sausage of plasticine round the chain and it keeps all the water out. If you forget to remove it before dropping the anchor you just need another bit!
