After several years sailing around the Solent I am now convinced of the delights of motor boating on the Thames (well my wife assures me that I am anyway). I am in the process (too late to back out) of buying a small (27ft Sealine) motor cruiser (planing) with a 175hp petrol engine. As I have been used to filling the tank once or twice (7gallons) a season on my sailing boat am am trying to work out the costs of fuel and other ancillary costs of the new boat. Obviously its going to be far more than I am used to but I would be very grateful for any ideas on costs on the Thames eg an idea of mpg for the boat, petrol costs, visitor mooring costs etc, plus any websites/ publications/ 'charts' that I should consider.

hi, been based on the Thames for 6 years now, loads that is different.

Moorings my 24 ft cost me 1700 quid pa, you may find some a bit cheaper.
River license about 150 quid
Insurance river use, 30 days tidal - about 170 quid.

Petrol - 90 odd per per litre - I used to have a V6 petrol 175 hp - burned about 1 - 1.5 gal per hour

Speed limit 4 ktns

Charts - you can get a guide to all the thames - good thing is you can see the bank at all times :)

Locks - loads of them - which end of the thames are you thinking of being based.

Let me know what else you need to know about and I'll do my best to answer.

Regards

Peter

I have owned several boats with large petrols and run them on the Thames.

You should expect to burn 1-2 gph at river speeds, therefore for a typical weekend away on the river one or two jerry cans filled up at Tesco's onthe way down normally would do you.

The other Mike's right - I can personally recommend the club at Bray.
