Surely it cannot be necessary to go to these extremes?

Maritime And Coastguard Agency (National)

(MCA) Jet ski and jet boat collide at Brighton

Solent Coastguard are repeating warnings about the potential dangers of high powered water craft such as jet skis and jet boats after several people are injured in a collision between the Brighton piers today.

The incident happened around lunch time when a jet boat collided with a jet ski, propelling it through the windshield of an anchored speed boat. The driver of the jet ski has an injured arm requiring stitches. Minor injuries were sustained by two people on the speed boat.

The jet ski is owned by a London man in his 30's and the jet boat was hired from Sussex Water Sports.

Solent Coastguard continues to warn all users of personal water craft and speed boats that due to the high speeds capable by these craft, accidents can and do happen very quickly if driven carelessly. Users must keep a sharp look out for other people on the water or swimmers and be sympathetic to other water users.

Doesn't this illustrate exactly what Ian and the BWI guy were saying about these type of craft being rented out and drivers being unaware of the dangers etc.

In Hong Kong you used to have to have a local Masters licence to be in charge of anything with more than (I think) 3 hp engine. Widely ignored by the flashy big powerboat lot, who carried jetskis as toys.

One such let a friend out on his jetski off the back of the powerboat, friend managed to ram powerboat at speed, killed himself and damaged the big boat hull. Owner of powerboat then had to claim his friend stole the jetski to keep his own licence.....

The careful experienced users will already know this, the ones who are likely to either be victims or perpetrators of accidents wont even know who Solent Coastgaurd are!
