I have been on the website of a new sailing system called WRINKLEY has anyone tried or seen this in the uk any thoughts on the sailability of this ? He claims it makes you go faster easily, by some 3 knots over conventional rigs.:cool:its from ALEXANDER YACHTS in oz

Is this http://www.alexanderyachts.com/page007.html what you mean?

Well, I don't know anything at all about the system beyond what it states on the web pages, but I do know that there ain't 3 knots to be got on my Moody 31, unless it somehow quadruples the power available from the sails without increasing the heeling forces. I know - hull speed isn't an absolute thing. But it is the point at which the amount of power required to make the boat go faster starts to increase dramatically, and as I easily achieve hull-speed (about 6-7 knots) with a conventional rig, it's difficult to see how the rather extreme claims made for this system could be realized.

Looks similar to the cambered panels being used on new junk rigs where they are proving very effective.

Setting your sails fuller works well in lightish wind on a beam reach.
Nothing new here.
The block capitals text does the website no favours, doesn't exactly suggest a science based background does it?

I must admit that when I look at the "buy now" page and it says "ring an Australian mobile number and give credit card details" I am pretty suspicious! This doesn't sound like a serious company at all.

They have a fine sense of humour in Australia don't they. Sounds like a cross between Comic Relief & April Fool's Day.

No need to buy anything though, you could do it yourself by cutting off most of the luff slides on an old clapped out mainsail.

I suspect it probably would have a beneficial effect in light airs on a beam reach. Get the luff out from behind the wind shadow of the mast.

Windward ability is likely to be slightly compromised :-)

Naaaaa!

that is crazy

might work just on one very angle to the wind

downwind can't se what it offers

upwind a liability

and when you are beam reaching - on my boat at least - I am pretty close to hull speed anyway

I'll get me TROLL gun..

Mmmm. New poster. First post. Posted at a very "Australian" time of day. About an Australian product.

Suspicious? Moi?

Either this is an early prank for April, or a really dim attempt at a scam. Or possibly someone dreaming and very under resourced, so I'll be charitable. Judging by the pics on the website, there's nothing innovative here, just a sail shy of a few hanks. By the look of the boat and mast, its a restoration project in waiting. Someone's pulling yer end.
