Bye ....
If you use charts that old, it won't show any wind farms. I agree that rocks and most buoys haven't moved.Slight thread drift but..........
I use a Memory map European edition with all the UK Hydrographic Office charts of Uk waters, my old 15inch laptop with an external antenna. Excellent and it does all I want it to do and more.
I also thought that I had bought the ability to have the French charts but cannot manage to get them onscreen. I am not worried about updates, I am still using paper charts from 1987.
It would be nice however to get France onto my laptop.
Any ideas?
You can't fight the east coast massive. I had to move ?So another thread to be closed because you guys don't like others PoV ??
I've had a couple of boats with (hard wired) wind instruments Raymarine and NASA. TBH I didn't find them very useful : it's easier to understand the wind is coming from where the windex is pointing and as for wind speed, every sailor should know when to reef or increase sail without a digital display. And imagine the fun of having to go up the mast to replace the rechargeable batteries when they fail!

Good point Pete but I've never used my autopilot that way.Agree with you entirely, however if you want to set your autopilot to steer to wind, a proper wind instrument is fairly essential.

I don’t know London Chartplotters but I’ve heard them well spoken of. I find using a tablet just fine. And if I had a spray hood it would be even better. Yes it is a bargain I think.Since the original question has been answered and the thread is threatening to deteriorate into a slugfest, I'll risk a hijack.
For the kind of sailing I do, mostly Solent pottering, with the odd trip further afield and French canal ambitions, I don't NEED a plotter, but it's definitely a nice to have, I also don't need to integrate everything, nor do I have the budget for it, so what to those that know think about using a daylight viewable tablet as a plotter?
It would live under the sprayhood, in a decent case. On the face of it, it would seem to give a much bigger screen for a lot less money, with the option to add AIS reception for around £100, which seems like a bit of a bargain, especially when I looked at the price of radar reflectors recently!
Since my experience of building PCs has lead me to believe strongly that buying bits from different suppliers is a bad idea because allegedly compatible parts don't always paly nicely together, I'm thinking London Chartplotters.
A monohull will tell you when she's got too much sail up for the conditions, but cats may not. Some won't even spill your tea as the wind builds and builds - until suddenly, oops. But it's a bit late to think about a reef when you're upside downevery sailor should know when to reef or increase sail without a digital display.

I understand OpenCPN pretty well but not the charts. The exercise to add charts would be good for me. Sending a PM.I accept that I am a dinosaur so can anyone help, I am quite happy to come to you with my laptop and pay beer tokens for success?
SW area.
Well I managed to get through, and even paid for the French charts from o-charts.org, but seem unable to get them onto my laptop and get them onscreen to use.
The instructions don't seem to help me.
