I've been looking out for a small cheap (ish) outboard on eBay and have seen lots of ads for a make called HangKai , they seem very reasonable .

Has anyone on here bought one ?

I was thinking I'd rather get a older "name" motor than one I never heard of before ................

They appear to be 2 strokes so unlikely to comply with the emissions regulations that came into force as part of the RCD a few years ago It will probably therefore be illegal to import sell or purchase them in the Uk, or anywhere in the Eu for that matter, for recreational use

I don't think it is illegal to buy, but it is illegal to distribute a non-compliant engine. While they are likely to be non-compliant, just because it is a 2-stroker does not infer it is automatically non-compliant.

If you buy one, I don't think there are any Agencies out there enforcing the regs in use.

I also saw this engine on fleabay yesterday. £290 inc delivery sounds a real bargain.

If they're anything like Chinky motorcycles......steer clear. Nil backup, spares or support of any use. At least if you buy a secondhand unit for the same price spares/backup is no more than a phonecall away.

If it's just for occasional use off the back of a tender I'd be tempted at £290 inc postage for a 3.5hp 2 stroke. At that price it's disposable. Not even worth paying for servicing. It says comes with a 2 year guarantee.

The CE mark is a manufacturer applied mark indicating the manufacturer claims the product meets the appropriate EU requirements. Quite how seriously it is enforced and what penalties could be applied to a chinese company I do not know.

I looked at an other well known chinese brand 4 st a while ago to replace mine I found a local lad who bought one 2 years ago brand new he is now chasing parts for it and cant find any he gave up and bought a honda in the end
