On the 6.30 news on BBC tonight there was an item about a proposed second Orwell crossing. Apparently, they propose to put a swing, or was it lifting?, bridge by the lock and a fixed bridge alongside. I didn't see the model for long enough to see how they were going to make one channel flowing and the other locked, but I wonder if anyone has noticed that yachts quite like to pass this way? The Dutch have come to terms with lifting bridges but it will be a whole new game for the Brits. Their estimate of the development costs of £60 million sounds suspiciously low to me.

I'm always suspicious when you drive on a road like the one south from Ipswich Dock and there are lots of roundabouts that the current traffic doesn't justify. Part of a grand plan. The Dutch are the masters of bridges but don't have the traffic.

Its all about opening up development land where is our very own Toyboy when he`s needed.
there is already a bridge over the lock for site traffic & this will mean that Debbages will not be able to service yachts

Interesting that the blurb talks about a fixed bridge over the new cut while the video has a rough depiction of something that looks like the 'winking eye' bridge over the Tyne. I'm sure we can all guess which would be cheaper to build. Looks like the end of navigation of the new cut for fixed mast vessels. It'll also mean the end of frequent lock openings into the wet dock if there is a lot of road traffic across the new bridges. That could seriously affect the popularity of the two marinas in the dock as well as the river trip businesses which work out of there.

In my view it has the potential to ruin the very waterfront that is supposed to be so vital for the Towns development.

Ha ha. I have been on it for 3 years now. The matter is with learned friends who do not seem to be in much hurry.

Dead right there, I reckon. I can well imagine no locking at all during rush hours. If they must put a bridge across the lock, they ought to put it at one end to minimise the time the bridge has to be open. If it's in the middle it would imply that the bridge has to be lifted for the entire locking cycle.

The local paper is flying a kite I believe; http://www.ipswichstar.co.uk/news/v..._could_transform_ipswich_waterfront_1_3816605

It ain't going to happen.

More on this link. As I understand it you might well be right about Debbages but they do seem aware that yachts pass through the lock. I would say that the estimated £60-80m cost will probably mean that this will not happen for a few years yet..... I had never noticed a shortage of under-developed land in Ipswich.

The Island Site is designated for residential development and has been on the Ipswich Local Development Plan for years as has much of the land around the dock. The Island is supposed to become a gated private community for the extremely wealthy.

The problem is the "waterfront" is ruining the town. It should be a dock but ABP are intent upon building everywhere. You will have noticed all the buildings on the island Site are temporary. We used to drive across the lock when going from one side of town to the other but now there is a gate preventing public access. It is an unlawful gate.

The destruction of the river as we know it is indeed a grand plan. All my life I have seen the river being narrowed and false banks being built up that squeeze the river even more. At one time it was possible to travel up to Stowmarket but a week or so back I tried to see how far I could get in a dinghy now and I was stopped by the weir at Constantine Road.

It is very important to keep Debbages open. My wife moors the boat there. I believe Chris has just signed a long lease. It is the best mooring we have ever had as it is so friendly and safe with so many people living there and only one way in and out.

I suspect that the idea of this being kite-flying may be right, but if it isn't it looks like the usual cock-up. If they really want to bridge the lock, the only way to do it properly is to have a lifting bridge at both ends of the lock and divert traffic between them as necessary, as the Dutch do in several places.

If you watch the video you will see it is a Ben Gummer promotion and has about as much chance of becoming fact as Ben has of being re-elected.
