Some friends of mine have just bort a rag and stick jobbie with the intention of sailing off into the horizon later this year.

The main problem for them is the name, it's called Mr Orion! They feel that he should become a she, but are still not sure of Orion. I suggested that the Mr should be changed to Mrs and the planetary theme could be continued with a change to Uranus, hence Mrs Uranus.

For some strange reason they seem less than delighted with this suggestion even though it does meet with their criteria. Is there anything more appropriate you can come up with, they are an unimaginative couple who really do need some help!

Mrs Uranus
By Jupiter that was a near thing.
Perhaps they should upgrade from the Orion to a Focus - maybe Focus All
because then the raggies will be thinking that it's a derivative of ForeCastle and the stinkiebums will be thinking its something rude.

Orion was a hunter and a big macho blokey type, so wouldn't be best pleased by being called Mrs Orion, unless he had a SWMBO (in which case your friends could argue that it was her, I guess). Greek mythology is, I think, silent on the subject.

However, was the previous owner being a clever git - i.e. is the boat a Sonata, or something, in which case it would, of course, be a Hunter and therefore all tickety boo? If your friends follow your helpful suggestion they would, naturally, have to call their tender "Captain Kirk" so that they could circle Uranus with it, wiping out Klingons.

There are lots of other nice mythical names: Harpy? (half sister of Happy?) Medusa? Pleieades? Cassandra? Probably all used already, and not particularly improved by the prefix Mrs.

Hey ho..............

How about one of the start in "Orions Belt" then..

1:Alnitak .
2:Alnilam
3:Mintaka

Or if you want some mythology, why not NORSE.. and choose "Freya"
The goddess of love and fertility.Freya was exceedingly beautiful and many fell in love with her, including giants.Freya is said to have a talent for witchcraft and it is said that when she came to Asgard she instructed the gods about magic charms and potions. Freya also has a warlike side and shares Odhinn's love of battle. She had a falcon skin that she sometimes donned to fly away.

I am wary of suggesting a very imaginative name if they are an unimaginative couple, otherwise lots of witty types will hail them and they will only be able to respond "uh?"

easily the best name is name of wife. But not a combination of their names, which can be naff.

You don't say where they are from. I think this could be part of the name. "Unimaginative of Basingstoke" might be a possible, or "Bereft of Ideas".

I would quite like to have a boat called "Dull" for use on the radio as "this is dull, dull, dull"

I am being a little unkind, they would soon pick up on double meanings. there is a boat in the Exe with the regal name of Regina, trouble is on the VHF can be easily mistaken for a very similar sounding word...............................................what a silly Mike Hunt he must be! /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Clive, as you can imagine on the Exe anything with X has been done, hence we have XTC, exetasie, etc etc

I suppose as they will be leaving it could be Ex-exe or XX or even Mrs X
