New Marina in Marbella

I wouldn't put my name down for a berth just yet. We are also in Andalucia and they have been talking about building a new marina here for the past 25 years - to date they still haven't decided where to put it.

The marina the Arab investors want to buy is Puerto Pesquera Marbella. My mate kept his T24 (late 1960's Guy Thompson designed yacht) in this marina from 2000 to 2004. He was retired, on a budget, and went through the French canals to get there and to return. A few of us joined him every year and sailed from there.

The marina is the refurbished "fish harbour" and had some of the best shower etc. facilities I have ever seen. It was the cheapest place he found to berth his boat and he lived aboard it for long periods. Many of the boats were small ones, day boats and many sub 35ft. It is a brilliant place to have your boat berthed on this part of the Spanish coast.

If this proposed "investment" goes ahead I am sure the unique character of the place will be destroyed and it will become another Puerto Banus lookalike. That is not progress, it is another nail in the coffin of the small yacht cruiser. These big expensive marinas are also too expensive for the local people to use. The only winner is the people who can afford to use very expensive facilities.

I am afraid I have to disagree with you entirely... I don't know how well you know Marbella but this area is well overdue for re-development. To the East of the port is a very large industrial estate which is very ugly, this will be relocated. Also to the North of the harbour is probably one of the poorest areas in Marbella which also needs to be flattened and re-developed with low cost, quality affordable housing for the locals. This can only be a good thing.

The cost of moorings has reduced significantly in Puerto Banus. Berths costing €45k PA 5 years ago can now be had for sub €18k. HAving said that there are still many berths available in the port so perhaps there is room for more reductions.

The "Arab" proposing this has recently bought Malaga FC and he is investing heavily, if the build goes ahead I would be surprised but you know these people bring a lot of wealth to Marbella. They are in town at the moment and people are enjoying the rich pickings.

In my opinion bring on the development.

Have to agree here, But the big question is "IF" it goes ahead I'm in Cabopino (not a cheap port) which to be honest is in desperate need of a good spruce up... This could only be a good thing for the area and community..... :D

It may have started already

I was talking to someone yesterday who said they have started to notify the business owners in the industrial estate that they have to leave. So it appears we may bringer starters orders...

I have a searay in the existing marina and I have to say from my point of view it is fantastic news. The industrial area is modern so not of any cultural value however the investment in the area and revenue from the cruise liner jetty will hopefully breathe new life into the place.

what is happening with Cabo Pino?

It was up for sale a few years ago, one of my friends looked at buying it but they wouldn't allow a full inspection of the books. Hence deal didn't get off the ground.

How long is left on the lease? Will it revert to government?

I havent been there for a few years, might take a trip down to check it out. Is Alberts still the bar of choice? And is the entrance as bad as it used to be? I once saw seagulls walking in the entrance as we were entering, needless to say we turned around and went home.

Puerto cabopina

Not sure what's happening with PC. I would say that the allure of alberts has gone in our house and so we havent been there for ages.

Have seen a few boats ground on the entrance no idea why they don't dredge it..i think the whole place could do with an upgrade..but it's the usual problem in spain the lack of transparency and the insistence on "cash incentives" holds the place back.

Hi Lozzer...

The bar of choice tends to be "Julies" to be honest although Alberts is still there and doing normal run of the mill good food

The parking in this place is horrendous ... They got done last year for charging entrance to non boat owners so they year they have just left it open ... If you want to watch some good old fashioned "Parking" rage this is the place to be ...... :o)

The entrance is still bad but if you know what you doing to ok, almost watched guy run a ground today was to far away to help and he got himself into a right pickle .... Just didnt have the "local" knowledge or didn't contact in advance...

I'm told there us only 2 years left of the lease hence the non-investment into the place but I'm told when it does go back to government they will invest into the place behind recognition ??????

They do dredge it but earlier this year it broke down ... Honestly you should see what they use now ... Health and safety !!!!!!! It's a digger strapped on to a boat... It's scary to watch never mind operate :o) how they get away with it heaven knows .........

Must admit I'm with Martin if they go ahead with this new marina (and I seriously do hope they do....) it can only be GOOD news.... I'd move there the only reason we use Cabopino is it's central for our villa....... (Elviria) ...Marbella would almost be the same distance but in a different direction
