On the mooring the last couple if days watching the UKD Marlin depositing dredgings in Colton Bay between the moorings and the main channel. Surprising place to put them (to me anyway), the charted depth don't appear too great there anyway. The way it's going the moorings there will be in a new lagoon off the main river! Anyone know the logic?

It is the bay below Pin Mill and before Collimer point (as i understand it). The UKD dredger spins around in that part of the river chucking stuff out - at least it was on Sunday when i looked out of my window - I am not sure how much they really aim where it lands and how much it is just dispersed in a part of the river where the ship channel is deep enough that it does not matter to them where it lands. I assume that the spoils stay in the river to prevent the river getting 'bigger' and so needing more water on each tide to flow in and out. As you can tell I am no expert.

It's till there now.
We were on the river as they were dredging and dumping yesterday.
We saw them dredging in Ipswich docks then pass us on their way down stream.
The river went BLACK with the mud as they started dumping just West of SYH and continued emptying while steaming back up river

I reasoned that if it doesn't affect the big ships then it won't affect me.

A bit of thread drift, sorry to interrupt a squabble.
If you look at this area on Google Earth, between Levington and Pin Mill the satellite images change and shows the difference between high and low water.About 500m on Levington side.
I rowed ashore near there once, no wonder it took so long!

I just don't get the constant maoning about the dredging on the Orwell.
I, for one am delighted that at least one East Coast river is being dredged.
It may be that I am by character not suited to enjoy the delights of East Coast sailing (and with a 7' deep keeler I certainly don't have the boat for it) but I find having to constantly navigate shallow puddles a pain. At least, when I stay between the cans on the Orwell I know I will always have enough water under the keel.

What's the alternative? Not dredge the Orwell? An then, in a decade or so, you will only be able to get to Ipswich two hours either side of HW in nothing larger than a bath tub.

Nothing against dredging as long as they take it out to sea not fill the river shallows with it
