New Hardy 40DS / Single engine is interesting

I do not want to rake up the whole Hardy "at the boat show thing", but specifically I thought that it was interesting that this boat is single engine, probably cruises at 10 / 12 NTS, I was just wandering if people have a view on whether this is the way more manufacturers will go,

I thought it was a lovely boat, but not for me, too small down below, but I would have no issues with the single engine format, in fact I think it is a good idea
 
I agree its a win for those who only ever do short hops ( that's most in my marina) as what difference does it make if you cross the Solent in 30 mins or 40 mins, for those that do longer trips they can chugg along and save a load of money. However to balance things out some like speed and if that's your thing at sea well you simply have to have more bhp
 
I thought it was a very good looking boat too. Yup, I think the single engined option will find some takers but the twin engined option will be easier to sell on in the future IMHO. I think single engines will be a more popular option on rufty tufty boats like the Hardy in the future but I can't see it being an option on gin palaces from PrinFairSeeker
 
Some of the more recent Brooms brought into Ireland have single d6 370s and are capable of 18 knots. I quite like the idea of a single which is capable of a decent turn of speed.
 
I liked it. The wife didn't.

As for the single engine option, I thought it was a good idea. Fishing boats mostly have single engines, I comforted myself. Then my brother reminded me that most fishing boats have a diesel fitter/expert as a crew member. And they don't do that because they never break down!

So since then I pondered. And now I feel that making mobos more economical by getting rid of one of the engines is lazy design. It's the shortest, easiest route to saving fuel. And it saves fuel even if you make no other changes.

But I'd like to keep the two engines, but still save fuel. I'm not sure Airbus would have just removed an engine and concluded 'job done' for next generation aircraft.

I really liked the Hardy DS. But it really can't be a vision of next-gen mobos. Because if you want it to perform similar to the Hardy 42 you have to put the same size engines in it. It's got rounder corners, and tinted windows but it's still old fashioned in its appetite for fuel.

I've tried to be convinced by the single engine arguments but can't. And I think I know why.

It suits the boat manufacturers because it's a cheap strategy for them. It works for their marketing and PR but it takes too much away from what I want.

Or maybe mobos can't be developed any further. Unlike cars, airplanes, trains, bicycles, washing machines, vacuum cleaners etc etc.

Or maybe the new engines never have a fault. Doubt it.

My first boat was single engine, shaft drive, planning hull, nightmare to park! I used it for 1 year in the Solent, running around, certainly seems to me that single engine boating has a future.
 
Like Firefly I do not have single engine hang up, however also have to agree with Deleted User, it is a market issue.

Fishing boats of this size used to have wing engines, however days are long gone, now boats simply single engine. Mission disabling engine faults incredibly rare on properly engineered installations.

Brave attempt to move the brand on, wish them success.

Bloody boat handling poof that can't park something as easy as a Huntress without Admiralty rudder!
