The scale of the boat looks somehow wrong, like it was designed as a 25/27 footer and just expanded directly until it reaches 55 ft. Proportionally it just looks wrong.
Agree - the internal cubic accomodation space for a 55ft boat seems limited to say the least, and I'm sure of limited appeal. What a waste of boat length.
Looks like it's designed as a big day boat for entertaining in the bay area.
I believe the original "pilothouse" types were intended for fast outings in marginal weather. Fewer cabins were a tradeoff that was accepted for a little less weight and better performance. To some shoppers this is still a design with a lot of character and style. Different strokes for different folks.
She is relatively narrow, with a length to beam ratio greater than 3 - and she probably has a bit of flare on her topsides, hence reducing waterline beam.
And a long lean hull will (all else being equal) have less resistance than a shorter more tubby hull of the same displacement. I realise however that this argument does not cut much ice with those folk who berth in marinas where charges are made for every last millimetre of overall length!
She has 2 x 1,000 hp diesels, and can do 34 knots - I know that this is not a fair comparison, but an RNLI Severn class lifeboat of similar length has 2 x 1,200 hp engines, and can probably acheive 25 knots flat out - but then she is probably much heavier, sturdier, beamier, and she also has bilge keels to allow her to dry out.
With this Eastbay 55 you can have a 3 stateroom option with the galley 'up' rather than 'down' - I think I would prefer this. Especially as I cannot really see why you would want 'one and a half' dinettes in the option with the galley 'down'.
My favourite of them all would probably be a flying bridge version though, like the smaller 47 at http://www.grandbanks.com/yachts/eastbay/47fb/index.cfm
I think that a boat like this is infinitely more attractive than say one of the classic Bertram, Viking or Hatteras flying bridge sportsfishing machines.
Yes the other GBs have always appealed to me, just that particular one has a layout that doesn't appeal. Always loved the traditional look, hence the appeal of similar makes such as Nordhavn.
