We have found Hardys to be generally good news - the complete opposite of the Mary Mouse. Let's hope the new operators have more of an idea about customer service than the previous tenants.

I use Hardy's regularly as it is about a three minute walk from my berth in the marina. The Sunday roast is very good, and for a quick lunch you can get a sausage and egg baguette and a pot of tea for about £5 which I consider excellent value, especially considering the sausages are very tasty and not the slurry you get served in some establishments, the soups are also superb. I think they have the balance right, the food is of a good standard for the price and it appears, I am pleased to say, they are doing quite well.

I'm afraid that, as far as The Lifeboat in East Cowes is concerned, Seajet is spot on.

On a club rally there last November, there was more salt in my sort-of Chicken Stroganoff than the whole of the Dead Sea. The food was completely un-eatable. Other people said the same. When I complained, the staff just ignored me, no apology or offer of an alternative dish. I couldn't refuse to pay - because I'd already paid! I spent the rest of the night waking up to down pints of water.

Re the Mary Mouse in Haslar, I have a lingering memory of greasy but not good value food from two different visits some years ago. Such primeval memories are strong and - however irrational, given the change of ownership - I'd need some positive reports before going there again.

+1. We eat frequently in Hardy's - most recently last Saturday night - and reckon it offers very decent food at reasonable prices, friendly staff and a decent atmosphere. Pleased to see it doing reasonable business most nights and delighted to eat there whenever we can as it would be a shame to see them close down. Good luck to Sarah and her team.

Wow, memory lane.

Anyone else remember it first opening as the Royal Naval and Royal Albert Yacht Club bar? How about the earlier portakabin bar near the bridge?

Was very involved in the early days of the marina, spooky how long ago that is now.....

Actually watched them removing the old pile moorings before dredging from a vantage point across the creek!

Wots appened to your mate Mark?

My daughter has just got hertself a saturday job in a cafe restaurant. she came home and was amazed that the soup served was four quid a bowl and it was merely heinz tomato. i told her it was the ambience and lovely staff people were paying for. she told me not to be so patronizing. also for years i told the kids if we were in a restaurant and the kids didnt eat all their food the cook would be very upset. now she knows that the cook doesnt give a monkeys. i know this is apro po of nothing.

Ambience, lovely staff, ingredients, fixtures and fittings, lighting and heating, washing up, cleaning, laundry, marketing, wages, breakages, accountancy fees, bank charges, pensions, NI, business rates, website, printing, training, flowers, candles, etc. Oh, and profit.
