Hi Jimi.

I was too embarrassed to day I had a V70, but now it's in the open, they're great. IMO, I care more about getting money off the actual price, rather than haggling for extras. For that sort of car, work them hard and offer cash buying. I'd think about a year old one- even cheaper and still with warranty. Personally, I'd expect to get an £8500 car for under £8000- that's what I did yesterday, but still feel a bit cheated and in retrospect think I should have offered £7500 initially- there are lots of dealers and they want the sale- I'm just not very good at haggling. However much you haggle, they always make it feel like hard work and always go and " ask their manager"- seems like a standard ploy for more run of the mill dealers. I think they just go to the toilet, or do a bit of paperwork for 10 minutes. If you have the confidence, start lower than you think with dealers.

Discount on a Corsa? I would say something like 120-130% ;-)

There must be something more fun to drive on the market then a Corsa! Even in the UK.
In Top Gear words "Totally uncool"...

You ought to be looking for around £800 off the list price of a Corsa. Can understand you might want to buy her a new car, but you can save stacks of money by buying a recent pre-registered car, often available with minimal mileage.

Why diesel? A small petrol version would be much cheaper to buy, and have similar economy.

If you particularly want a diesel, the Corsa's engine is in fact a Fiat Multijet diesel, so you might also like to look at a Fiat Punto diesel (which you'd probably get at £1000 off list). I had a Punto rental car for 2 weeks in Greece this year and was very impressed by it.

Some motoring journalists rate the Toyota Yaris D-4D diesel very highly, but (again on basis of rental experience in Greece) I don't think the Yaris is as enjoyable to drive. Again, look for £1000 off list on a Yaris diesel.

Looked at Top gear website, seem to think corsa a competent car, and since lots of driving schools use them, must be quite good for learners.

erm I've got about 2500 gm points which can only be redeeemed on a new car, a pre-registered car can be got at a discount of c£3K or 25% so I want to get at least £1K off list .. I like diesels the engines just seem to go on for ever.

Depends on whether you're trading in the golf or not.
Look at <A target="_blank" HREF=http://vauxhall.co.uk/>vauxhalls</A> website at their vip prices, most dealers will match this, or look for a nearly new one, maybe 3 - 6 month old, normally get some good deals

Motoring Story

A chap goes into a bar and says "May I have a pint of your very finest English bitter please."

"Certainly sir", replies the barmaid, noticing something odd about the man.

"Excuse me sir, I don't mean to be rude, but do you realise that you have a steering wheel sticking out of the top of your trousers?" she asked.

"I know" he says, "I can't do anything about it. It's driving me nuts".

Don't know if the same applies in the UK, but in France I would buy an ex-rental car from one of the big operators.

Average age : 5 months
Average mileage : about 6000
Discount on new price : 25 - 30%
Car serviced on average 40 times (after each rental)
Full guarantee as if new.

Re: Discounts...

Jimi, have a look on Vauxhall's web site - they're doing around 1k discount online so you should be able to do better than that in the showroom. Are you going to p/x the old car? I've got an old workmate who is sales manager at a local (to me) Vauxhall dealership and another who owns a dealership in Essex if you want me to see what I can do.

If you want 3 doors, there's a couple of late used <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.trade-sales.co.uk/Stock/Search1Frameset.asp?MakeModel=Vauxhall¦Corsa¦vauxhalldb/corsa3dr.jpg
&submit.x=32&submit.y=18>here</A>
I've bought from these people in the past and was very pleased with the price.

check out www.whatcar.co.uk, they list the RRP and a 'Target' Price. which is what they think the actual selling price should be. You will get a much better deal if you take their finance (even if you then settle it in full a week later). you will also get a better deal if you take something that is in stock, rather than a weird spec which needs to be built.
What car list, for example, the 1.3 CDTi 16V exprssion for 8555 list and 7945 target price - so that is about 7-8%.

Sacrilege! How can anybody consider swapping a Golf for a Vauxhall? I had the misfortune of driving an almost new Vectra last week. Give me my thirteen year old golf anyday! I haven't had to move a gearstick that far since I had my old 100E Anglia.
