Have confirmed with Karen at A1 Covers and Sails to go ahead with replacing the canopy on the S28, soon to be renamed "Bizzy Bee"after Deb's new Bizzyness "The Beauty Room at The Beehive". Nice for her to have a boat named after her first venture:cool:

I was going to have a few things tidied up with the existing canopy and replace some of the windows that have sun damage but I reckon I'll be keeping hold of this boat for much longer than previous boats (incredibly) so it'll be nice to get it done properly.

A couple of little mods over the standard canopy:

1. rather than a single windscreen, we're having 4 zipped panels made up instead giving the option to leave section of the windscreen in place whilst underway or at the berth. In particular, there'll effectively be new side windows (where the screen wraps around the side) that can be taken out to give ventilation if needed should the weather not be warm enough to take the canopy off but warm enough to create an oven inside the boat with the greenhouse effect.

2. more toggles to roll up the sections at the back of the canopy rather than always needing to stow in the overhead locker.

3. an extra zipped in section in the aft canopy on the stbd side to match the zipped panel on the port side. that way, the centre rear of the canopy can be rolled up leaving both side panels in place as a wind break if the wind if coming from the side whilst at berth.

I hear Karen does a stirling job and she certainly seemed to know her stuff when speaking to her on the phone. 3 flap system over the zips rather than two for example and spending the time to take a template using tarpaulin before making the actual canopy.

Will let you know the outcome. The images below show the general idea of the changes being made, red line = where the new zips will go.

Gary that's how we have the bow set-up on our current Cranchi and we LOVE it. It means we can open just the drivers side 'front' section of the canopy which give a great viewing angle.... infact since I got it the only time any other section of the canopy has been off it to clean it, it's perfectly easy to helm with just that front section on the drivers side open - you won't regret it!

thanks guys, good to know the name and canopy configuration appears to be a good move. Missed a trick with the opening post so thought I'd best repost before some other smarty pants does :D

Gary another great mod for the helm side of the boat is to have the sidescreen to windscreen zip put in so it un-zips top to bottom and have the windscreen to roof zip un-zip from the outside edge of the screen to the centre.

This way you can partially unzip the top corner of the windscreen panel to get ventilation or shout instructions to the crew on he foredeck without taking the whole panel out.

Yes, I like the mods Gary. We had a new canopy made up for
Rafiki this yer, with similar mods. We have zip out quarter windows front and rear. Ever so easy to attach/detach, and adds to the airiness. Split front screen, and Bimini option.

Has really transformed Raf in looks and usability.

Hi G... "at last" i can now boast that i was the first guest crew on Bizzy Bee !!!!...... GREAT NAME !!!!... great mods to canopy... good luck to Debs on the new venture... any throttle update??? .. regards from me !!

Gary, sorry for the thread drift ... but I just noticed this on Alt's signature. Wtf! Alt, you only just got this boat, what's going on?

Cheers
Jimmy

Jimmy, Alt mentioned in another thread that he'll be downgrading to a jet plane (or cruise liner, didn't speficy!) and tour the world for a bit :)

Jimmy - Explanation is in the ad (and posted above by Gary) - The GF wants to go travelling the world, and I wouldn't mind going with her! It's either travelling or the boat. If she sells, I go travelling. If she doesn't sell, I go boating :D

Looks tidy, however i'd have done some things different (maybe you have your own reasoning)

I would not have had the cut/zip in the front section of the canopy at the red line. Instead, i'd have done it at the yellow line.
Why? Because there's a fold at the red line and the canopy won't roll straight/easily. If it were at the yellow line it'd roll straight (i've seen this cock-up on many boats before)

What's going on here? Thought the shape would have been made to suit the canopy better

The red line has a stainless steel bar behind it.

If the clear window touches the bar, it rusts when it heats, so it's a good place to put fabric on an S28.

Fully appreciate where you're coming from, however looking at my own canopy:

You'll see they did indeed use fabric where steel meets the clear window - in previous boat's i've had that problem. HOWEVER, the canopy people had the sense not to have the zip after a bend as it won't fold properly
