Announced this morning, the Government has approved the construction of a new lift bridge for Poole. It is to built a few hundred yards North, towards Cobbs Quay, from the existing bridge, which will be kept. Construction to start 2005.

Apparently both bridges will be used, opening one at a time. So boats will have to negotiate one bridge, and then wait between the two, for the other to open. Could be intersting

Re:Eh?

Not sure what you are on about here. Not much space for holding what? And in who's middle is there not much space?

Don't worry, I know the answer to that one. It is of course Byron........and Colin.

Re:Madness

Fortunately I dont moor at Cobbs but do go there for maintenance and spend some evenings there, and its hard enough already trying to hold station amongst all the other craft without being stuck between two bridges.

I dont see what they hope to achieve by building another bridge as there's nothing on the other side ( Hamworthy ) any way , and I cant imagine the locals wanting more traffic through they're streets.

More EU funding which has to be spent on something no doubt !

Re:Madness

There will be something on the Hamworthy side - nearly 3,000 new dwellings! The whole of the Hamworthy side, and the other side, West Quay, will be redeveloped. Don't where Sunseeker will go, or the establishment that looks after my boat.

Seems to be a lot of local support, but doesn't look like good news for water users.

I believe the idea is so that there is always road access between the poole side and hanworthy at all times (during the summer months the queue can be well over 1/2 hour), when one bridge is open the other bridge is closed. May sound stupid but why not build a bridge with enough water clearance to let even masted sail boats through, thus giving 24 hr water and road access. I think there may have been some talk on this type of bridge starting near the holes bay road (or whatever its called, the dual carriagway anyway)

buy some property on the other side I suppose - may make moriconium look a little more attractive in a few years to come - still too expensive there though
