New boat!

This is making me think about boatyard costs.

Mr. G. is doing this for fun. We can have a separate discussion about exactly what mental ailment Mr. G. might be suffering from that makes this self-flagellation seem like fun, but we all suffer from the same ailment to some degree, so put that to one side.

But suppose Mr. G. was doing this for a customer. What would he have to charge to make the job wash its face?

Boat math suggests we shouldn't even ask the question, but seriously, what would a boatyard have to charge for this job?
Give him P45 and deport him.

oh that's just nasty! Wait till he makes good and we can debate whether it was worth the payment. I've already learned that without tremendous skill painting is a dead loss. You got to get it right first time. Corrective action after the fact just makes it worse. He will find that out for himself shortly.

@TwoHooter £3-5k plus for a spray job I reckon. Switch panels, nav kit, batt charger, wiring repairs, polishing, servicing etc…can’t see any change from another £5k done by pro’s

I’m about 50 hours into the hull so far at a guess

BruceK comments just motivate me more @vas ?

50 hours at Solent prices (inc VAT) £4,200, West Country prices £3,000, Manx prices £50 (assuming you don't have VAT there).
Plus the materials of course. And the yard rental. And the inevitable extras which the yard never warned of.
Having said all that, if you paid the right price for the boat I reckon the real maths will work out very well, never mind the boat maths.
Really enjoying watching this thread.
BTW I don't see BruceK comments, I have him on Ignore. Can't remember why. I spect it's mutual.

glad you’re enjoying it!Not much else going on currently forum wise. That’ll change soon I hope. We need some cruise reports!

we do have VAT here….can’t charge it to myself though?

? I dont recall having any disagreement with you but am happy to acknowledge I'm not your / everybody's cup of tea.

not too sure about that. In theory you can even paint with a bloody brush and then sort it out with cutting (not that I'm keen to do any of that...)

When the orange peel is that large you tend to square off the peaks and not touch the troughs. This makes the light refract worse and highlights the error. To get to the troughs you have to sand deeply and over such large panels run the risk of going through the top coat. In addition there will always be subtle colour differences in dark paints from where sanded and where not. I said to Paul to apply the base coat thick as he likes but the colour coat needs to be very thin. This can be overcoated with a clear 2pack coat. When the colour coat is applied too thickly he should have stopped there. The best thing he can do imo is to spray a 2pak clear coat on smoothly now.

Yes you are correct it can be retrieved but the chances of DIY doing that successfully are very slim without sanding through to the base coat. In all my experience I found it was better to acknowledge the error, strip, and start again if you want a smooth finish.
There is an old adage in the painter's book of words that is absolutely golden. "Work up to a finish dont work down to a finish" and although my words are harsh I'm actually trying to help him, not that he listens. (the Whatsapp conversations could fill a book)

You don’t have long to finish it has it has to be ready , for when the pirates arrive.

Went much better today with the right thinners.

Still orange peeled but much shallower.

knocked back with 600 grit dry. I reckon I could have carried on but a 3rd coat gives me more paint to play with

much better and even levelled out a bit too as it tacked off.

an expert boat detailer was in the yard and reckons it will come up really well. I’m going to let it cure and shrink for 2 weeks then finish off with wet sand and buff. Need a break from the sander and the T Top is bugging me so into that next with single pack paint

My reflections are you won’t get a “YouTube“ finish off the roller unless you are inside. Wind really makes the thinners evaporate but wasn’t an option to be indoors. Im too tight to tent it ?. At least the paint is on and the weather can do what it likes now!

thanks for all the comments so far (not the Welsh based ones obviously….except @LBRodders?)

Happy days. Looks great. When are the shark teeth going on the bow?!

I would take you singly me out as a compliment, but everything is relative and the rest are a uncouth rabble! :p

Rodders isn't wales based he he is like you sits in a boat on a trailer humming engine noises .

Then apply a clear coat.

Look at what I am talking about. Note even the colour coat has a dull finish even though it is a pearlescent colour

then the clearcoat without touching the colour coat

panels are extremely difficult to get right. But the golden rule is dont touch the final colour coat (daughter's car I resprayed)
