New boat!

A little update to at least try and keep this thread on track!

had a go at the switch panel.

new illuminated switches that look the same as the originals are on the way from China (getting into AliExpress recently) 28 buttons for £30!

I stripped all the buttons out and labelled the wiring. 2nd to last wire I noticed they where already numbered with little collars further down the loom! Quality build ?

Stripped the surface back and wrapped with grey carbon wrap.

I then got some A4 transparent inkjet sticker sheets. You can print on them and stick on! It’s not waterproof as such so I can go another layer over the top or maybe spray with lacquer but that might melt stuff.

Not bad for my first attempt. Might pull it off and have another go and move a few bits about. Pug was impressed



Radar taken off and motorised dash removed ready for refit. Bit of hull work too....removing anti-foul from above the waterline?????

Today was sandblasting day.

the white hull section has had primacon then antifouled. No idea why as it’s above the waterline but it all needs to go. Been getting on ok with scraper and DA 80 grit for the primacon. Getting to some angles and flares so tried cheapo blasting.

50 kg of sand to clean up and not a lot to show for all my efforts ??? Does leave the gel untouched though. Just wish I could have done more surface area.

I’ve got Strippit HD coming but it will react with coppercoat so have to be careful hence I blasted along the water line so I can keep away from it.

are you sure you got your setup right? No idea, what is right, but end result seems too little for so much sand...
I guess you are going to mask properly and carefully the cc before applying chemicals above it!

I am but I’m not sure I’m going to do the chemical route. Certainly not going to leave it for 12 hours and go home. I did more than in the photo blasting wise....but not loads more.

one error I made was you need to have the sand higher than the tip otherwise water runs down the clear tube and makes the sand wet. That did indeed happen. Haven’t even started the other side yet

Small update....still on the white section

Tried Strippit HD....waste of time....did naff all.

10 hours and 2 DA sanders later.......



thank god that’s over. If you see anyone in a boatyard painting antifoul above the waterline.....go and punch them.....on behalf of the next owner! Next step 220 grit the whole hull, degrease and get rolling’!

in other news.....4 x new 6.5 inch speakers as current ones are shot and new head unit...300w...should sound good. Victron blue ip22 going in, console cover on route and and trim tab sorted. making all upholstery removable as its an open boat. Waiting on a last piece so I can redo the dash. That’ll do for now ?

Going the same colour as the hull. Was hoping to remove it but it’s a monster bit of plastic. I can walk about on it no issue.

Absolutely great boat !! I am not totally objective - allow me to spill some nerdy details on the Palmetto brand.

In my previous life I was a sales rep for Brunswick in Europe, responsible for Boston Whaler and Sea Ray sales in France and Italy.
The Sea Pro brand was bought by Brunswick in 2005, as part of the "buy more transoms" strategy.
Basically Sea Pro provided great hulls in the mid range (roughly like Trophy), Sea Boss was their "price point" sister - never officially launched in Europe, and Palmetto was The Flagship.
Italy fell in love with the bigger Sea pro's and the Palmettos.

All these brands provided transoms to bolt more Mercury engines onto - and supply additional retail channels - so all was nice and rosy for a few years...

The Hancock family who sold the Sea Pro /Sea Boss/Palmetto brand to Bruswick were on a non-compete clause after receiving generous sums at their sale to Brunswick in 2005 .
So they took a decade of retirement, and then the virus hit again... both brothers started a new boat business. (-- from Hull Truth -- )
In 2015 Jimmy Hancock and Preston Wrenn (one of the founders of Tidewater) started manufacturing the Sea Pro boats again. They purchased the right to that name from Brunswick.
Tommy Hancock had launched the Sportsman brand previously.

Sea Pro / Palmetto had a short life under the Brunswick umbrella - basically until the Big Credit Bust hit in 2008 and there were too many brands, too many production plants, no more credit to finance dealers'floor planning nor customers optimistic plans to buy new boats.

Stock value (NYSE: BC) went down to $3, from $ 40 previously... Below is the official message on closing the Newberry SC plant.

Anyway - a good Palmetto hull will survive all the storms !! Congratulations again !!

LAKE FOREST, Ill., May 13, 2008 Brunswick Corporation (NYSE: BC) announced today that it will cease production of its Bluewater Marine brands -- including Sea Pro, Sea Boss, Palmetto and Laguna -- with the upcoming 2009 model year, which commences July 1. As a result of this action, Brunswick will close its production facility in Newberry, S.C., by the end of June.
The U.S. marine industry has been in a prolonged slowdown since late 2005, driven by an uncertain economy, high fuel prices, the housing slump and other economic factors that have affected consumers confidence and eroded their discretionary spending, explained Dustan E. McCoy, Brunswick chairman and chief executive officer. As a result, we are assessing the recovery potential for all marine segments in which we participate, their fragmented nature, the costs of our continued presence in certain of them, and the position of our brands. Our work is ongoing and is focused on developing profitable brand positioning in all segments. With this action, we believe we will solidify our presence in the highly fragmented saltwater segment by concentrating our efforts and leveraging our resources on such brands as Boston Whaler, Triton, Trophy, and our sportfishing offerings from Hatteras, Cabo and Albemarle, while sharpening our market focus and providing necessary cost reductions.
