New Boat thread, probably not!

Having never sailed one I'm not exactly well placed to answer that, though I can't imagine many people having that experience or wanting to find out.
10-15+ metre beam seas in any pleasure vessel? I'll pass.

Anything taller than the fly bridge and breaking would persuade me to turn and put it behind us...but long tall sea should be fine, when we turned into Cascais we had about 4 metres on the side for a while and it was less dramatic than it looked.

Looks terrific. Especially impressed by the catscanner. I had a look around a Lagoon cat at SIBS a couple of years ago and was very taken with the amount of space. Good looking boats, too.

Hope you feel able to carry on posting on this forum: two engines and a disinclination to talk about gribbling the futtocks should do it. :D

Hey Nigel,

Just picked up on the update. Great videos, excepting the rough stuff which I hope you never encounter. Thanks for introducing us to catamarans and the lovely experience of Christmas Day sailing in Portugal. Outstanding! As you say a boat is indeed a boat and Saul Goodman felt easy to handle but b****y big. Great inside and out and very comfortable. If that sounds like another going over to the dark side, don't hold your breath.

We have so enjoyed our cruising and other activities with you over the last couple of years. We look forward to hearing more of the exploits to come and meeting up again somewhere along the way. In the meantime may your seas be calm and your winds fair. Above all have fun.

Congratulations Nigel, what a tremendous adventure ahead, wish you luck and keep posting !

We’ve recently changed plans and will spend the spring/summer cruising up - then down the Portuguese Atlantic coast, late Summer to the Canaries and then west; so no med for a few years...the Great Loop has been calling and we want to do it while we can still afford the medical insurance!

We were granted our US visas last week, so now all we need to do is get there in one piece...once the mast is down we’ll be a motorboat for a season or two.

I hope we’ll circumnavigate before we need or want to sell the boat sontje Med will be in around 5 years from now, ATBE.

Good lord thats a helluva change of plan! That is fantastic. Please keep the updates going on the Mobo forum for that trip

Christmas Day was great! and NYE :)

We've been down to the boat a bit this last week to keep an eye on lines but missed a trip out for obvious reasons...

We have a couple coming down from Northern Spain next week end to meet with a view to coming across on the ARC with us....all very strange, a bit like online dating I imagine. We used a service called OceanCrewLink and were inundated with folk applying to come with us; please let Elvia know that its her last chance to change her mind ;)

The lights will come into their own when we are at anchor, listening to steel drums coming form the shore while we chill out on the sugar scoops, at least thats the picture in my head :)

Speak soon

(A)tlantic (R)ally for (Cruisers) Bouba....

Its an Annual event/crossing form either Las Palmas to St Lucia or ARC+ which is Las Palmas to Cape Verde to St Lucia....

We are crossing with the ARC+ which leaves on Nov 11th 2018; it will take around 4 weeks to complete the crossing and we will be in the company of 100ish other boats, (although they will be out of visual range after the first 24 hours).

It's a way to do the trip in relative safety, knowing that you are being watched over, having support on line and nearby and perceived safety in numbers....we aren't looking forward to some of the social aspects, looks like there are fancy dress parties and lots of discos in the run up to the starting gun but I'm sure that we can politely keep a low profile...

Why the sea water flush Nigel?

Couldn't you use fresh water as you have the water maker?

Yes and it’s on the list of jobs to spec/cost/do - it should be simple as there a spare connection ready to use in our hull that could be sent to the master cabin head.

Probably won’t bother with the port side heads x 2 as they will see little use.

Congratulations Nigel, only just spotted this thread.
A couple of weeks ago we seatrialled hull #1 Nautitech Power 47 on Southampton water. Looking at cats for the same reason, crossing the channel isn't a challenge anymore. The power cat isn't dissimilar enough to our Bavaria 450, so last week we seatrialled the Nautitech Open 40 & 46 with sticks and flappy things. I found myself getting excited by the challenge of understanding sailing. So much so, that if given the option of going out on the Solent in our boat or a sailing cat, I think the cat wins.
I don't think SWMBO is convinced yet, but I wouldn't rule out the 2019 ARC.

We, Ann and I are lucky in that we have an equal love of life on board and we usually come to boat buying decisions from the same direction; for us, like you the challenge of learning to sail is of huge appeal - we have time on our hands and a big dose of wunderlust.

You’ve got plenty of brands in the 40’ - 45’ production boat segment, Nauticat, FP, Lagoon, Leopard to name a few and for my money, if you’re considering a power cat then you might as well buy one with a mast and get the best of both worlds - albeit with less hp.

Last week we took the boat 20nm along the coast and spent an evening at anchor - it was lovely but it took us 6 hours to travel those 20nm, we could have turned on an engine or two but tbh, we were enjoying just floating along at a snails pace; that’s not for everyone but for now it suits us just fine.

Give Graham Laver - grahamlaver@ancasta.com - a shout at Ancasta, he’s got a wealth of knowledge about Lagoons and I’m sure he’s keen to get some prospects for La Grande Motte multi hull show in April....

I bet Ancasta are tearing their hair out about the fact that Lagoon are not offering any power cats below 63ft in size! I reckon they could sell loads of 40-50ft power cats if they had them. The 630 is absolutely massive and not cheap either so it must have a very limited market whereas a 45 footer would hit the sweet spot in the power cat market

Btw apropos nothing in particular, apparently the 630 crossed the pond on its own bottom straight after the Cannes show last year to get to the Fort Lauderdale show which I thought was impressive given the fact that it was a brand new boat

I'm a bit late to this thread, sorry - but huge congrats Nigel and Ann. I thought the video was excellent, I liked the way you synced the uw lights to the soundtrack :encouragement:

Is the plan to use the Lagoon for the Loop?

The line from the factory is that the power cats were not that popular - indeed the MY range recentlyly included a 40’ boat but it was short lived. (Long faces and mumbles when brought up as a question during our factory visit!)
Fontaine Pajot, Moorings, Leopard and Bavaria are all getting in on the act but I suspect that either they don’t have the order book of Lagoon or the motor boat volume of the Beneteau / Jeanneau stable to keep them strong and on brand.

That coupled with a production line that’s knocking out one boat a day in the 38’ to 45’ range alone and it’s understanable that they’ve stayed focussed on evolving the sailing range.

The MY brand is at the higher end and I think that they’ve learned from their experience with Prestige branding that ‘cheap’ boats at the bottom of the range don’t do the brand any favours...

630 Hulls #1 crossing (think it was a couple of years ago), was indeed impressive, we were near one in Cascais in 2016 and it’s a great looking boat. It’s still a Lagoon 620 with larger engines tho and as a buyer it’s a very niche decision to not spec a sail...imho

But yes, Ancasta can’t get enough boats from Lagoon, they’re lucky to get 6 a year so any more in the range would be great for them....

Definitely Jimmy - mast will be unstepped in either Miami or Fort L and then we’re going to aim to get to the lakes by end on June 2019 - quick out and in to keep immigration happy and then south through the Missouri and Tennisse rivers and into the Gulf for early 2020. Might get the mast shipped to us or cut across to FL.

We’ll miss some of the prettier sights due to our beam but other than that we think it’s a decent Loop boat...maybe see you Stateside for a few miles on the Loop some time?
