New Boat, Swedish Delta "Yacht" - anyone got any info? Jack?

Cant you guys get back to discussing boats, this was a really interesting thread, warts and all...even before Lars joined in...
As someone with an interest in boats, the value for me is in the opinion not the bed side manner, as it were.

But talk about easily offended! oops, I'm doing it now...

I am sorry MapisM but what does it matter how many posts someone has done. ...

From where I am sitting and a few other people's view, some comments have ruined the chance of a interesting thread..

I hope you can see the irony in your words I've quoted above. I know it's not politically correct but I don't care. When you have made a total of 4 posts but are looking forward to an "interesting read" (yeah, "read", not "thread" - I mean "read" as distinct from "write") it makes you a taker not a giver. Now, that's fine, I mean to be a reader not a writer. Many people don't have time to write much on here, or are new to boats, or whatever. No problem at all, and no criticism from me of reading rather than writing. But as a taker it's a bit rich of you to juxtapose the two bits I've quoted above in firing your shots at MapisM who is a major multi-media giver.

So you might think it doesn't "matter how many posts someone has done", but if that number were your figure of 4 each, there would be nothing for you to read. So it does matter, really.

By the way, I'm not just taking sides with MapisM for the sake of it. Indeed he and I have plenty of major disagreements (!). I'd be writing exactly the above if you were firing your shots at any other poster who has written plenty on here

Actually JFM I a badly dyslexic so I think that's a little unfair. I am not trying to be horrible, but I have been reading this forum for years. I just find it irritating when someone who is genuinely knowledgable in theat sector of topic gets put down by someone who thinks they know better, generally with the thousands of posts under their belt. Sure well done for taking the time to post but I think that most people who post on here have done thousand s of post. Very few who post only have a few, purely because they get shot down by others. I hope we can agree to disagree JFM asi think you bare a top bloke.

This idea of new posters being shot down is surely a nonsense, otherwise there's be no one posting at all, or hundreds of people with just a few posts but never posting. It seems to me that most new posters are given a pretty warm welcome. It's only the unpleasant ignorant ones who might receive the sharp end of someone's tongue, or keyboard.

I hope you stick around and contribute some more, don't worry about your spelling/grammar, it's the message that counts. And just out of curiosity, why did you pick Door Mop?

Oh dear, as someone said, what have I done...:)

I will not comment on the comments, as this will not take the thread forward, but since most of you don´t know me, I'll do a short résumé.

My background is as an Art Director at some of the biggest advertising agencies in the world, like Y&R and BBDO. In the eighties I started a design company in Stockholm and ended up in Monaco. There I was living for twelve years and started to design superyachts. I was also a broker for a couple of years and had the privilege of visiting/showing almost all big yachts that was on the market, probably 200 between 100 and 200 feet. So I got to see a lot and learn a lot from what I saw, from other brokers, the clients and the crews. On top of this I was living three years on a Moonen 85 in Golfe Juan. Not many have spent every single night for thee years on a yacht like this, so even there I learned a lot. A sound or an alarm in the middle of the night and I could usually fix it within minutes. All of this, being a captain/engineer, plus yacht and charter broker, helped me a lot when I was designing yachts. Also the fact that I was living in Port Camille Rayon and later on another yacht in Port Vauban, Antibes a couple of more years and finally among the Rich and Famous in Monaco, have given me a pretty good foundation for designing yachts for the Mediterranean lifestyle. BTW, I have also sailed a Swan 651 a couple of years...

And after I returned to Sweden I started this new venture, which today is run as three entities, design, sales and production. I am doing the design and the guys at the factory are translating it into very well built boats. Of course they can be improved somewhere and also customized, but I think we have fulfilled our goal of making a new kind of boats, going in circles around the competition...;)

welcome back. A "reculer pour mieux sauter"is a bit of a rite of passage here, so let's look forward to sharing your pearls of design wisdom for a long time to come. In return, the cumulative corporate wisdom of the forum in owning, running, commissioning and selling boats is eeeeenormous, so you can understand that people might want also to share that experience with you.

It is a magnificent, mutually beneficial, experience even if the seas might get a bit bumpy at times :)

+1 on what sarabande says,

can we please get down to business now and see how JFM can go ahead with his next project? :p
Lars, if you have a day or two spare, would be nice to sort threads by read # and check both JFM's Squadron 78 built threads ;)

cheers

V.

Welcome back Lars. Yours is a truly impressive CV for this boating malarkey :)

Looking forward now to some interesting debate on a couple of new boats for forumites. Great stuff. :D

JFM, are we going for a forum discussion on the 9th Jan?

Glad you came back Lars so a couple of questions.

My understanding is carbon fibre gets its strength during the curing phase in an autoclave. Do you have a 90ft oven or is it a different process.

Should I damage my beautiful delta, is repairing carbon fibre anymore complex than grp?

Would love to see some in build pictures if you have any.

You must be thinking of epoxy, we use vinylester and it is not worse to repair than polyester and GRP from what I know. Build pictures, you mean the infusion..?

Welcome back Lars!
Thanks for resume. Haha, we have hung out in same places - my first SofF boat was in Camille Rayon, 2001, then I bought a berth in Port Vauban. Still there, on Mole sud. Nearly every weekend - boarding pass LHR-NCE sitting here for tomorrow afternoon.

OK a few more questions please on D80...

1. Any firm plans on whether #1 will be at Stockholm, Gothenberg or Helsinki shows in 2014?
2. Approximately what stage of construction is #2 up to? Are there any changes planned compared with #1 (as far as you can mention - I appreciate owner may prefer confidentiality)
3. Any more pictures please of e/room on #1?
4. Also, any pictures please of bath/shower rooms on #1? I cannot find any on the net
5. There are two "boxes" port and starboard, each side as you enter the saloon thru the patio doors. Port side (I think) is for the staircase down to crew space I guess, via an Opacmare door in the C pillar - this is very nice because accessing crew space underway thru a transom door is sometimes not fun. But what is the other "box" for? Just storage, and put there to balance the visual look?

Finally, two quick design thoughts. First, it seems we came up with very similar external staircase designs :). See picture of mine below, custom made for my last Sq78 (sorry not a great pic - I'll find better). Just a few thoughts on this:
(a) I deliberately used RHS (120x60, the "wrong way round") not SHS, for looks
(b) I think my handrail design is cleaner (because it is simpler) - just saying. The D80 double rail and the curve up at the top of your rails was a bit non-minimalist imho and out of kilter with the boat generally. What do you think?
(c) We came to completely different conclusion about the riser dimension, haha! Old aged pensioners will definitely prefer yours :D :D
(d) I put Osma cold white LED down lights under each step - 4 focussed pencil streaks of light under each step, and they look fantastic

Second, I just wanted to post a couple of dashboard pics, merely as food for thought. There is much you could criticise about the detail and I'm posting these only relative to the discussion above about touch screen ergonomics. As you can see the touch screens are close to the people and the things you only need to look at, not touch, are further away. This would be my approach - I could not live with getting off my chair every time I wanted to touch the touch screen, and obviously a remote control doesn't really cut a lot of mustard either. As I say, just food for thought

Hi there. I might have missed any previous mention of that date? You mean beers at LIBS? Yes would love to. We need to do another thread and see who is around and on which days. I'll be there on 9th if that is the late night Thursday

Pleased to see you back Lars.

It may be a bit painful mixing it with potential end-users but I'm sure it will add an edge or broader perspective when you are designing.

And when you've finished with JFMs requirements, I'd like a 36-38 footer please. At a slightly lower price.

Cheers

Garold

And a few answers then...

1. We have no firm plans other than showing #2 at the Cannes Show in September 2014. In Dusseldorf we will show the D26, D33 and D34 Sidewalk, but not the D54 or the D80.
2. They are working in the hull, but the deck is not there yet I believe. No changes to mention really.
3. I have nothing more from the engine room to show.
4. Bath room pictures I have, but I will e-mail them to you later.
5. The port side box is the staircase down as you said and the starboard is storage, also with a pantograph door. Both cubes are to carry and to stabilize the flybridge so it doesn't flex sideways.

And the stair to the fly was designed almost as yours, the extra and curved bars were on the surprise account...;)

Thank you, yes we have some gaps in the model program, like 36', 46' and 66' to mention a few. I wonder where the market (size) will be next...?
