New boat construction method

But, wow! what an effort. I couldn't do it with properly sized and seasoned wood, let alone lolly sticks!

Amazing ......

I'm always impressed by those who build models with matchsticks - but this takes the cake !!

I take it that many on the forums remember the South African guy who built alloy boats with the "Bomb" method ??

Literally a hole in the ground shape of the hull ... a large sheet of alloy ... and water + big bomb !! Can't remember the whole sequence - but once bomb went off it basically forced the alloy sheet to take the shape of the hole ... producing a single sheet, no joint hull ......

I reckon it must have been an April edition >>??????? anyone know about this ?>?

Re: Amazing ......

I certainly remember the article several years ago but can't remember the details. I believe there is a similar industrial method of making 'bowl' shapes etc, but again no actual knowledge.

Industrial method ...

That is actually an old method as the water spreads the impact and stops rupture of the medium.

Similar to when testing pressure vessels .... fill with water and pump up - then if it bursts the water absorbs the force etc.

Re: Amazing ......

Explosive Forming has been used before for aluminium construction. The big problem with alloy welded structures is distortion. What you do with EF is weld the shell bits together without formers (which gives a rough shape) stuff it in a very strong mould (usually reinforced concrete set in a pit) screw down a gert big steel lid and charge the thing with a gas/air mix. Light blue touch paper (spark plug actually) and the thing takes on the form of the mould. Big snag is you still have to weld the frames in causing more distortion, but I am told its not too bad as the aluminium is work hardened by the bang. Have to use correct grade I guess....
I think apart from the SA guy several west coast USA yards had ago but the risk of the process and the cost of the moulds put everyone off...... Good idea though!

Re: Amazing ......

This reminds me of the ocassion a few years ago when I was making a pond in our garden. One of my neighbours offered to do the job for me with some explosives from a nearby quarry. Whilst I turned down the offer....he never did things by halves and I didn't really want a 40 feet deep crater....we had many interesting discussions in the pub about how best to control blasts.
