I have now heard so many horror stories about the cheaper end of the market. Its a big dilema - I own a boat built like a brick shit house, however I miss the sailing performance of the lighter wieght boats. I would charter a light weight, but I am afraid I would never buy one.

Even some of the quality end Scandanavian boats are now using Balsa samwhich below the water line to cut weight and improve performance. I think this is a disasterous form of contruction on the long term.

UNfortunately ccscott has to make do with ancient wooden-plankified old-technology thing much older than ten years old with no nice new mouldings at all....

Thomas - a tricky one, I deliberated all last summer between the Jeanneau SO 37 and the Bav 37. Even test drove the Bav from Opals at Gosport. I took a quick look at the ben but it was a bit light for my liking.

I sat with spreadsheets to try to determine costs contained in the minefield of extras/standard/deals with each boat.
I tried to negotiate a discount with Jeanneau - No Go - and the delivery time was 6 months (Bav were 1 month)

I prefered the style of the Jeanneau, there seemed to be some sort of stigma about the Bav (head down now for that comment)
What did I buy? A Jeanneau, but 5 years old, imaculate, all the goodies you could ever want and proven/run and 16K cheaper (on a standard boat show offer Jen 37)
Talk to unbiased people about both - (there are some real horror stories about the bavs).
I also took the view that Sunsail must have looked very hard at the market - their Jeanneau fleet replacement: Jeanneau

Look long and hard - look at nearly new, save a fortune!

Agree with the Nearly New comment Ian.

I sold my old boat quickly at the end of the winter so I could pounce if the right thing came up.

I got a 9 month old, 16 hrs <100nm Bav 34 for £10k off new. All I had to do was get up at 5.30 one morning and dash up to Hartlepool quickly to secure the deal, and pay for road transport to get her back to the South Coast.

10 year old should not be tired, look at the older BOSS Westerly Fulmars. They are hammered every day and have been for years back to the days when they were Westerly Seaschool boats. I bought a 1993 Dehler 36 CWS in Holland, built like a tank but engineered for production rather than handbuilt like my previous boat, a Fulmar. Am I biassed?

It looks pretty much like six of one and half a dozen of the other, I guess that the deciding factor will be the price. Ancaster seem to be more keen to do a deal than Opal, then there is a dealer in France who come out 7K cheaper than the others for the same spec.

I'll have to see what I do at the boat show on Sunday and report back on Monday.

If you can't decide between the two then take a look at a third option - a Dufour. A much better boat in my opinion and much better quality. Just compare the deck fittings (all Lewmar) and hull construction. It's worth a look

Probability more like. Practised the other week she did ... with two fenders tied together ... she managed to get one either side & round the keel ... "Fair bit of feeling there!", I thought!
