We did have a blocking diode but that was disconnected when the splitter was fitted (which is effectively a solid state switch) to cut the voltage loss on the alternator. I had heard of adverc type regulators then but the ignorant electrician hadn't and fitted this when I had ased for an Adverc. When the engine battery reaches 13.5 volts the splitter connects the 2 battery banks together, and disconnectes when the voltage drops below.
The original wiring on the splitter was only about 20 amp capable, and the insulation was all wrinkled (due to excess heat?) so I put in some heavy stuff. That was the last time I ever let anyone purporting to be a professional work on the boat. Do it all myself now (with the help of this board!)
