It's not really any more spartan than the infamous GT35, just lighter.

It's odd that yacht design has in general gone remorselessly modern outside - fake wood if any, white plastic everywhere, exposed carbon fibre - but down below the general style, if not the layout, hasn't moved on since about 1973.

I read the review at the time, and I have refreshed my memory. Horrified skirt gathering at the interior, but I still like it!

Apart from the door being too square at the top, and the scatter cushions being too small, I quite like that.

Perhaps we could crowdsource the cost (about twenty quid by this time next year, teh way things are going) and donate it to YM for another round of Crash Test Boat?

I think it'll sell before it gets down to £20. I'm sure if they could've produced them for £80,000 and still made a profit them would've had a business going. The boat was as good, or maybe even better to some minds, as a similar sized Bavaria etc but the original price tag was just too much.

I agree. Apart from the price, it was also an odd design, neither traditional enough to be classic nor funky enough to be modern, and the eye-watering price seemed to reflect more the cost of making things in tiny number than fundamental quality . Very nicely made, by all accounts, but not enough do justify a cost three time that of a similar Bavaria.

I see that Aston Martin have started a small run of new DB4s, entirely hand made in their original factory for a cool £1.5m each ... and all sold. Buying a GT35 would have been like giving the people in Newport Pagnell the price of a DB11 to make a reproduction of a 1992 Ford Mondeo Ghia by hand. Perfectly good car, but not for the money.

Meanwhile I am sitting in a Clyde marina and I can't see any AWBs at all, though that's because it's dark and raining. Hah. Time for a curry, I think.

I wonder what price it will sell at?! If they can't sell it at £140k how did they ever think they were going to sell it at £300k!!!?

New 33ft Dufour £144,000
New 36ft Bavaria £170,000
New 36ft Hanse £210,000

So perhaps it doesnt seem like too bad value after all. Build quality is streets ahead of the above.
 
Still quite a few angular corners which might not appeal though to many and presumably even if the structure is allegedly in some fashion better the fittings will presumably be from the same usual brands so what added features with this look does it provide over other vessels of this vintage? I am not certain I understand it's USP?

I actually like the look of the boat and think (like many others) would be more than satisfied with its performance and general "quality" but not at its original price. The problem with buying this boat even at the depressed asking price is that it is effectively a one off and a failure in the market. The difficulty of selling it now is unlikely to change in the future. This has happened to many similar boats in the past, although often epoxy wood or steel rather than GRP.

If you are prepared to take the risk of difficulty in selling and take the long view it could be a good buy.

It is more than the visual finish down below - which from the photos is very similar to Bavaria, but in the design and construction of the rest of the boat which is "better" than mass produced boats - but not twice as good. Many of the design features would not lend themselves to mass production. The interior could look more attractive and bespoke without extra cost whereas a mass production boat has limited scope within a tight material budget.

At its original price it would not stand comparison with any similar size boat - indeed the latest HR 340 even today would be substantially cheaper as would boats like the cruising X Boats and Arconas of similar size. However at £140k or less for a little used 3 year old boat it is a material bargain if you can accept buying a boat that was a commercial failure and perhaps difficult to sell in the future.
