What do you think it is for?
What do you think it is for?
Apropos nothing Mike.......it looks like you need to raid your piggy bank and buy a couple of new courtesy flags. Ones in that condition in Turkey would deffo incur the wrath of the local marine plod.
Don't forget to send me the details of your Vodafone contact
Yep it is a 4G (LTE) omni-directional antenna.
When I first tried it, there wasn't much difference between my 4G(LTE) router's twin antenna and the dome thing to see in the pic.
So I didn't install it.
Since then, SammyB has moved in next door and the signal dropped.
Connecting the antenna in the pic has nearly brought the connection speed back to what it was before they moved in.
So, IMO, it is only worth fitting antenna like this to get a clearer signal away from objects blocking - not to get more gain.
So, at sea, I am not expecting any improvement over the standard antenna.
BTW
I have managed to source an unlimited 4G service in Spain (Vodafone).
And it is fast - as much as 42Mbs.
Good enough for anything including TV.
It was just a matter of disconnecting my WiFi box to the marina and inserting the 4G one.
I've also invested in a number of Raspberry Pis running Kodi fitted to all the boat's TVs
The latest Raspberry Pis incorporate WiFi so there is no need for any extra internal wiring in the boat.
Movies and BBC TV all through the Raspberry Pi
Satellite TV through the ship's dome is now only able to receive Sky News - I've cancelled the Sky subscription - it wasn't worth it any more.

Not cheap
I've gone for the 12 month contract
Even then, they aren't always available - a yachtie friend in SC is having to wait about a month for his.
Seems that Vodafone are rationing them.
I have tried other suppliers - it is the "unlimited" bit that we are looking for.
For those that can manage on only 40gb per month, this offer at 30€ per month is a bargain, you could have 3 sims and 120gb pm for the same price.

Cool, thanks. I have Phoenix installed but will check out the others.
I have Pis on 2 of the boat TVs that connect to access point onboard. If good marina wifi then we use that otherwise 4G.
