hello,

as part of my mobo rebuilt, I bought a s/h but totally unused SMEV gas oven. Seems to be the 30lt one that has both oven and grill, a 12V light and ignition.
All fitted 2 yrs ago, new pipes from the gas cylinder on the f/b to the hob and a tee with another 40cm pipe to the oven.
Hob works fine (always did),
Tried last week the oven, ignition works (well I can see the spark and hear the tsk tsk sound...) but I don't smell gas and it doesn't fire up.

Deducting and based on the fact that next to it the hob works, I can only assume it's not the regulator (which I'm about to replace anyway) but something is either blocked or a security issue of some sort in the oven.
Took me a couple of hours to fit it properly and secure it in place last week and tbh not in a hurry to remove the oven and investigate further right now.
Hence my post asking if I'm missing something big, like a security issue or non return valve that needs higher pressure (although the pic I post states that it will work on .28mbar butane), or whatever.

any ideas?

back of the oven looks like this, just fitted an elbow and a straight con piece to mate to the bronze nut. I wonder if it would need a special piece that would poke a n.return valve or something...

I take it that while you are attempting to light the oven you are firmly holding in the button that allows gas to bypass the flame failure device ?

pushing the control knob, rather that hold firmly will be better

Yes you are right. Found the manual now

Push in and turn the control knob to a position between 1 and 6. Keep the control knob pushed in while operating the igniter. ( or use a match or gas lighter) Keep the knob pushed in for a few second after the flame is lit.

i have one i installed 18 yrs ago but never needed to read a manual

thanks for the replies,

yes I'm pushing it in as will all gas hobs/ovens I've ever used down here or in the UK.
Turning and pushing means I can hear the igniter working and spark appears.
I'm assuming that's all that needs to be done tbh!
Cannot imagine that it would spark without letting gas out and you'd need something else as well.
Is there a chance that due to the years that it's been subjected to sun and heat, some seals/grommets/whatever inside the mechanism have hardened/failed and it wont let the gas flow?
Any one can point to a manual, or explanation of how gas ovens of that type work, maybe service manual showing how to disassemble the thing?

cheers

Duff gas cut off ?????

I had a Smev, three rings, grill and oven. The grill (just the grill) stopped working just as your oven has. I had to disassemble the cooker and trace the pipe work up to the grill burner. It was blocked with crud at a joint. Cleared it, put it back together and the grill worked better than since new. I suspect that it had been partially blocked since manufacture.
Cue gas safe anoracks :encouragement:

leaving elf & safety aside,

I can imagine it could well be both!

Wonder how a gas cut off works, if it's anything like the SMEG hob at home, I'd expect it to START first BUT fail to keep the flame going once you stopped pushing the button in for the igniter...

re blockage, it must be at the main pipe to the distributor as neither oven nor grill works.
I see that I'll have to remove it though and that's going to be a pain :(

Not SMEV related, but I bought a new Neptune cooker this year, and the Gas Engineer couldn't get the installation to pass the gas leak test... Obviously went over all the joints in the all new install, but in the end the cooker was defective. Top marks to Seamark Nunn though who had one waiting for me when I turned up to swap it out. New one was fine and tested good straight away...

an update in case someone finds the same symptoms...

Right, first of all, my SMEV is model 3110. Oddly, you have to undo the four screws that hold the label printed with the type of food and time to cook on the bottom righthand of the fascia, remove the alli label and turn it around, if that's not odd, I really don't know what is.

So with the help of a good friend (registered gas engineer/fitter) that happened to be visiting we undid the sides of the oven and after removing way too many bolts, we realised we only really needed to undo the righthand side panel. All pipework is behind there:

The L shaped pipe from the back of the oven to the tee behind the label on the bottom right of the fascia was the culprit. 10mins with a thin and then a thicker wire, got it completely unblocked and air went through it nicely. Bolted it back on, removed the jets, checked them, bolted everything back on, blew through the input and checked that the main knob did what's meant to be doing distributing gas to the grill, or oven as well as regulating supply to the oven.

So happy that all's fine, half assembled the sides and once the awful weather we're going through since last night is over I'll get it back onboard, test for leaks and refit.

How it got all this black carbon looking deposits blocking all the 40cm of the pipe is a mystery. As I said oven looks like it's never been fired up although it's 25yo according to the label!

cheers
