New 2 stroke outboard?

I thought that the sale of new 2 stroke outboard motors was banned?

Strictly "the ban", from 200?, applies to all engines for recreational craft which do not comply with with the emissions requirements. 2 strokes, 4 stroke, inboard or outboard.
There are emission limits that apply to diesel engines too.
The regulations that apply in the UK are part of the RCD.

There are (large) 2 stroke outboards with fuel injection systems that comply ( Evinrude E-Tec and Mercury/ Marina Optimax for example)

Small carburetted engines using premix fuel are not likely to comply. Hence their demise.

Engines already in the EU at the start date can still be sold but no more that do not comply can be imported or manufactured.

We have seen ebay ads for these or similar. We dont know how they can legally be sold. We do not believe claims that they will comply with the regulations

Maybe they come direct to the purchaser from the Chinese factory. That way the person committing the offence is the purcahser ??

It is surprising that the major outboard manufacturers and the dealers do not attempt to get the importation of these engines stopped

Yep, because of pollution. Only allowed for applications that cannot have the engine flat like edge trimmers, saws, etc.
New outboards can be 4 stroke only.

I dont think that is quite true. I think you can buy them for trade use, not leisure, but a smaller one was £2k+ when I looked into it, so may as well buy the 4stroke!

That's because the Recreational Craft directive only applies to ..... recreational craft!

Channel Islands

One can still buy a legal, new 2stroke in the Channel Islands. A mate has just bought a new Tohatsu 3.5.

Right;)
Though a safety boat for the sailing club is.. which ;) !

It depends on the constitution of the Sailing Club as to whether it is a commercial venture or not.

We've just taken delivery of a new Evinrude 2 stroke - which is legal for RCD craft.

Check out the fuel mix - 25-1 that's almost Seagull territory so what does that tell you about the quality of a supposed new outboard???

I had noticed that, and it has bad implications for pollution as well as quality. I never intended buying one, just spotted it when looking for something else. My own 2 hp Yamaha uses 100:1 mix. I suspect the e-bay one is made by the Chinese NBG manufacturing company.

Nope.. It's emissions not engine technology that's regulated.

As already stated, you can by an Evinrude E-Tec brand new, which is very 2-stroke and very legal. Unfortunately it's not economical to use the technology on small outboards.

Oh dear me! With up to six four engined jets in our airspace here at one time, I'm sure this wee Chinese import is really going to tip the balance!
