Well, the boat is back in the water and the new engine is working.

Now it seems we can never return to Scotland - £3k to be banged up in a Travelodge, plus 3 (three!) Covid tests plus very expensive indirect flights.

Looks like if we ever want to go home we will have to sail back.

Whats the time limit on visiting a 'red' country? Lets say you were in a red country 10 days before hitting UK shores, but spent those 10 days out of the red country, would that mean a further 10 days stay in a covid hotel, or would the 10 days that have passed since leaving a red country be enough to allow the normal 10 day at home isolation?
 
Its all gone to pot..........
3k is a joke last time I stayed in a travelodge in Luton waiting for a flight the next morning it cost £35 for two of us . Some one making some money .
You forgotten one bit if you did sail back there may be another cost involved VAT

Change your mindset, you are with the boat so you are home. Look on returning to the cold north as going back.

Ref the current situation, in addition to being useless, all politicians are popularists so whilst they may get away with the current plan until Easter, it won't survive until the summer holidays, when the fear of Covid will have receded.

Think of those poor British sods stuck in the EU with no residency; what happens to them come 1st April?

As a Portuguese resident any chance of you getting to a warmer cheaper location?

According to Sky News:
From 15 February, UK and Irish residents arriving in England who have been in "red list" countries in the previous 10 days will need to quarantine in a hotel room for 10 days on their arrival.

If you are coming to Scotland it seems you have to go into a hotel not of your choosing at a cost of £1750, irrespective of which country you have come from.

OK, wrong time of year I know, but a slow sail home direct from Portugal to the UK, non-stop, would negate the need for an enforced travel lodge experience I guess. Would he be allowed to stop in Spain or France enroute?

Or, just get home in the next 5 days by whatever means possible.

The government have form on this. Every time the border rules are tightened, they reliably provide a window of opportunity during which there is an influx of people returning to the UK, thereby promoting the spread of the virus, rather than preventing it...

I checked flights yesterday, cheapest Lisbon to Heathrow for two of us + luggage was through Brussels with overnight stop so, with Covid tests, hotel and hire car back home, would cost around £900. Not worth it just to get jabs so, we'll get down to the boat and sit it out. Staying here is safer than risking infection on two flights, 3 airports and a hotel + taxis.
