I've got a 12 year old 46' flybridge yacht and need to fit a holding tank...where do you start??

Is it as simple as find a nice big spot (lots of those - yeah right!!), plonk in a tank, run the toilets / showers and basins to it and stick on a skin fitting for pumping out??

What (if anything) is it okay to allow into the sea...do the sinks / showers have to go to the holding tanks too or is it 'the other things'??

Any advice and suggested names of holding tank manufacturers very welcome.

Cheers Stefan

Well........., more or less!

I had one fitted to my Fairline Turbo 36 (Vetus unit), by Marlow Marine Services at Shepperton Marina, 5 years ago at £1,200.

For sea use you don't need one anyway, and a lot of people say avoid as long as possible.

I think it is a bit anti social dumping a load of **** in a nice secluded harbour/ anchorage and then going for a swim!

For R Thames ( and no doubt other rivers) only contents of WC need to go into holding tank. If everything goes in you'll be emptying it continuously at about £10 a time.

Try and get a decent sized tank. I think 20 gallons is about average. You will need deck discharge aswell as underwater, and a guage is a good idea.

I wouldn't dream of fitting one myself, but good luck if you do.

Not a D.I.Y. job in my view. Too many boats with holding tanks have a peculiar aroma about them. They definately need careful thought about venting. As a matter of interest one pint of milk dumped in a river does more damage than 5 gallons of sewage. Lots of 'things' like to eat sewage.. not me although I do like Crab & Lobster.

It is a total surprise that Hadyn has not responded to this query so far as this is his specialist subject. He must be down in Plymouth or where he keeps his boat trying to sort out the water in the diesel tanks.

Anyway, I had a Fairline Mirage with a holding tank and it was never any problem - no smells, no leaks, etc. The only issue was where to pump it out and generally this was minimum 10 miles offshore (not easy in a Fairline Mirage). She had a deck pump-out but I never used it as I could not find a marina in Scotland with the necessary facilities.

No doubt things are more civilised down South!
