Popped down the boat today, well, sort of considering it's a 200 mile round trip:rolleyes: took the serpentine belt off as part of investigating a squeel..... it's glazed and there's small cracks in the tread.. across ways, not the along the length of the belt...
+ there's some fraying of the tread too.

needs changing but we're going across to the IOW tomorrow evening for the weekend so I need to get a replacement pronto.

Thinking of taking the belt in to a local motor factors here in Milton Keynes and asking them to match it... good/bad call?

Failing that it's either going to be a pitstop at Keypart on the way to Southampton or find a place in Southampton that holds stock... does anyone know of a place that would, in Southampton that is? Ideally needs to be the west side of the M3/M27 junction down towards Hythe following the M271/A35.

worse case scenario is I refit the original to buy some time so it's not a show stopper

cheers

What engine is the belt for

take it into halfords and match it up with one from the rack , bet it costs less than £10 , or i owe you a pint.

did that today and found one that was a tad shorter, all others in the store were way too short... had the 6 treads and even had the angled sides... walked away (for now) as the tread thickness was slightly larger so it may not sit in the pully grooves fully and it was slightly shorter but I guess that may be because the old one has stretched? The width of the belt was spot on... it was £9.98 so you're pretty much bang on the money too

will have a look at a couple of other places round here to see if they can get a better match.. if not, the Halfords one is worth a punt as I'm pretty sure the tensioner will slacken off enough to make up for the shorter length... a couple of inches shorter at most. worse case, it'll get thrown in the boat with all the other spares that never get used:D

Just spoke to a guy who repowered a carbed 5.0 litre with an EFI 5.0 ten years ago.
He took off the new serpentine belt (EFI) and went hunting for a generic spare. He put on the el cheapo to see what kind of service you might expect, and the new original was put under the helm seat with the other spares.
Ten years and 1000 engine hours later, the same el cheapo drives the pulleys (never been adjusted) and the original is still waiting for a turn :)

the tread thickness was slightly larger
Well, it might be also that the old one is thinner due to wear...
Re.the length, I can't remember by heart which kind of tensioner is used on the 5 liters block.
Anyhow, I'd be surprised if it couldn't take care of the shorter length, if as you say the difference is small.

Gary,

There is a Merc parts dealer at Southampton. Can't remember exactly where, but you'll find it easy enough with a Google.

I don't think Halfords cater for many 5.0 V8's, so you might struggle a bit there.

Good luck.

For a temporary cure to the squealing, try some talcom powder. Used to work on my 5.7.

Keypart are only in Watford so since you've got to drive past them to get to the boat, surely (yeah I know don't call me Shirley) it'd be easiest to pick one up from them that you KNOW is going to fit?

tis a valid point usually..... it's a little off route as we tend to go Bicester and then the A34... I need to hit a 6:30pm high tide to launch from a tidal slip in neaps.. can't leave the house until 2pm as waiting for Deb's to finish work and besides , they're 5 x the cost of the Halfords job.... it's tight timing as it is without going in to Kings Langley.... will make do for now and see, as Andie says, if the el cheapo version does it.. if not, I'll refit the old as it does have some life left in it and then source another belt

Gary
Best buy a couple so you have a spare. The one thing about belts breaking is that they ALWAYS do it at the most inconvenient moment.

Spares for all the belts, and the impellers too

Tears Gary, tears. It'll all end in tears you know. Be nicely ready just in time for the tide then twang thwack karboom.

"What's that noise?"

"Blo**dy belt's snapped, I knew we should have gone to Keypart, it's all your fault........."

Tears I tell you.
