Hello,
Could someone give me an advice on how to install a cut engine system on a motor boat in case the driver falls out of the boat, preventing the engine to keep running. It is a remote control 25hp outboard mercury engine in a 4,5 boat. I am looking for the cheapest solution possible.
If you have any ideas please post them!

Can we assume there isn't a standard engine remote control that already has the kill cord button.

Can you tell us what make and model the remote is.

Mercury outboards generally have switch that when engaged grounds the ignition circuit, therefore it is in the closed position when it is engaged by the tether pulling out.

Proper tether switches can be cheaply bought for this setup at most chandlers. Run one side of the switch to ground and tie the other into the ignition pole of your keyswitch.

I'm sorry i'm fairly new to the boating experience. I don't see how this kill switch works exactly. Does it have to be attached to me so I'd pull it by jumping out of the boat?

Before you go buying anything, have a good look at your remote control unit. I don't know how old your engine/controller is but, if it's a Mercury one, the chances are it's already got a kill switch on it.

The older Mercury controls had a simple chrome toggle switch hidden under a cunning plastic shroud on the side of the control unit. With the switch pushed up into the shroud, the engine will run, and in the down position it stops. You're supposed to have a small metal ring on a lanyard - the ring goes over the toggle before you push it up into the shroud, and it won't come off without pulling the switch down. The other end of the lanyard is tied to you. Then if/when you fall overboard, the ring operates the kill switch as it gets pulled away, and the engine stops.

If you have got the switch but no lanyard/ring a bit of cord and an old key ring will do the trick. Oh, and if the switch gets pushed up into the shroud without a ring on it (useful if those left on the boat need to motor it back to pick up the skipper :)), there's a small slot in the shroud so you can push the switch down with the ignition key.

Thats the one, ovalish shaped and held on by two screws, has a raised plastic portion in the centre where the switch lurks underneath.
