Thinking about doing the ARC so looked at their checklist. They insist on a waterproof torch. I have several torches on board but non are waterproof. So seems time to get something appropriate

I guess a chunky powerful torch that is LED and rubberised is what I would like. I would prefer not rechargable so I can out in new batteries when I need it rather than waiting to recharge

What is your favourite?

Thanks

I wanted the same as you a few years back (for ISAF regulations).. Rubberized was on my wish list since all my other torches were like that...

In the end went for Fenix TK15 S2 because it gave the same range as the required searchlight.. springs at each end of the battery compartment (copes with drops better) and fitted into jacket pockets easily..

You also get a lanyard and fabric belt holster with them so very easy to fit to the belt straps on most waterproof trousers.

Link showing beam from the cockpit here compared with 12V/50W searchlight in the next photo..

Choose one of those fitted with an intelligent brain, which stops the owner shining it into the eyes of other crew & ruining their night vision. I'm sure this rare device is available somewhere. ;)

These little guys are so cheap and incredibly bright. The beam can be focussed. Run on a single AA battery or rechargeable Lithium. I have 5 of em great on the boat. I think water proof with o rings etc. fairly light so not damaged when dropped.
Buy one with simple on off not adjustable brightness or strobe. Buy cheapest buy several.

i wouldn t buy a cheap torch ---i have got a glamp site--thegreenescape.co.uk---no on site electricity---i get dozens of cheap torches left every year---all rubbish---i use fenix ----expensive/reliable/last for years-----regards lenten

I always wondered how I'd know when the battery was losing power with the LED torches... In the past I had known LED devices dim rather quick then die...

With the Fenix I have found that when on full power, if the battery starts to die it will revert to the next power level down. If you try switching to full power, it will again go back down a level (and run on power level 3 of 4)...

If you continue to use the torch, the same drop happens again.. or just manually switch it to a lower level to get extended run time anyway...

Does this indication of battery life happen with the other manufacturer torches?

I buy small torches from the local hardware store .Cree leds and at €2 they're amazing value. They're like small spotlights, focusable and very, very powerful. I dropped one the other day and it kept shining from the bottom for hours. They're not supposed to be waterproof.

Just had to replace the battery in mine-starting to dim off after about two and a half years!
If you want a good fully waterproof one check out the Banggood divers torches.
Whilst they use rechargable batteries again they last for ages and you can get a 12 volt charger also from banggood.
They are clever in that by adjusting the amount you screw in the bulb end which switches the light on it gives you two levels of brightness plus a powerful strobe

All dive torches are supposed to be water proof, unless they are cheap ones off ebay from China when they often are not...

For a handheld the best cheap dive torch is probably the LED Lenser http://www.torchdirect.co.uk/dive-torches.html next level is probably Tektite Expedition http://www.tek-tite.co.uk/acatalog/LED_Torches.html or Excursion. Alternatively look at Halcyon, Hollis, Light Monkey, or Agir http://www.dirdirect.com/Back-up-Lights/

As mentioned above Fenix have a good reputation as well.

I make dive torches and canisters and have a Tektite excursion as one of my backups and it has done a good few hundred dives in my drysuit pocket without any issues at all.

I bought this the other day, not waterproof, but I was so impressed I bought 2 more for Christmas presents.
Not from Aldi but google 3W Extreme CREE Spotlight and Lantern and you will find them.
It does hi/lo/strobe and handle twists to pistol grip style, runs off 3 AA batteries
Ed: and it's got inspection lamp multi led on under side.

My experience is almost exactly the opposite, my expensive Fenix gave up the ghost after about 18 months whereas my Ebay cheapies are all still going strong after several years.

However the best torch by far that I've bought is an Olight Seeker R40, superb beam and easily rechargeable by usb lead. Not cheap but worth every penny.

fenix has been good for me---but i am sure there are other reliable brands out there---- the main thrust of my argument is don t buy cheap--- the motto for glampsite is--- all you need is a torch and a tooth brush---but when we started up a number of people forgot a torch---so as a curtesy i bought about 20 odd various cheap torchs ---i also have a revolving pool of left behind torches----none of which i would trust for use in the middle of the ocean-----regards lenten---ps people don t read the imformation so i bought spare toothbrushes as well
