I have an old Neco autopilot, the drive unit is low on oil. Does anyone have one of these as I have no idea what oil to use?

Castrol 'Magna'. That's all the manual says, nothing about the viscosity. Castrol have a variety of different viscosities but everybody seems to only have then in 20 litre or larger quantities.

I need some. How did you know it was low on oil?

there is a screw that you undo, you fill it from a bolthole by the round feedback cover. When it comes out of the screw hole it is full enough

on ours pocking a piece of wire in the bottom hole comes out dry

I have a manual that explains routine maintenance

Call Morris Lubricants, they will advise. A quick check on other forums suggest all sorts of reason why everything is bad i.e. no agreement.

Castro Magna is available in various grades and one forum post suggest that the grade used in Neco motor was the same as 3 in 1. Mmmm,

No idea if this helps, but my old B&G Hydra Pilot drove a ram made by (the now defunct) Smiths Industries. The B&G manual specified ‘Dynobear 10’ and when I needed some I had to buy more than needed. I’m very happy to sell some on in smaller quantities if it helps!

I did email them a while back and gave up! The motor is one eigth horse powered, driving a 5/8th diameter shaft through a 'SW' gearbox. Runs at 35 or 17.5 r.pm. depending on voltage. Not fast but does have some strength I doubt something as thin as 3 in 1 would suffice; on the other hand it won't want treacle. As I said the manual doesn't specify the viscosity.

Might be suitable. I am emailing a chap in Italy who knows the Neco systems so see if he knows the viscosity.
