I don't seem to be able to access the "add/remove" icon in the control panel. It seems as if a self-imported programme has included a built-in self protection measure. Any ideas? Any time I click on it there is either no response or a panel opens to say that explorer has encountered a problem and has to close.

Secondly - new windows, for some reason, have taken to sizing themselves about 1" square when they open. How to bring them back to full size?

Sorry for the non-boaty aspect of this but there is so much IT expertise on hand and certainly quicker than going through the so-called help lines.

Two things to try

1 For the dodgy add/remove (presumably programs) go to start, the run and type sfc/scannow, then return. This checks integrity of windows system files. Might find the problem.

2 Suspect that 'something' has got you. Are you using current antivirus definitions and a firewall? Try downloading poup stopper from here:- <A target="_blank" HREF=http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree_download.html[/ur]

and adaware from here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/>[url]http://www.panicware.com/product_psfree_download.html[/ur]

and adaware from here http://www.lavasoftusa.com/</A> Ru...e=1>my opinion is complete rubbish, probably.

>run and type sfc/scannow<

Just being picky but you need a space between the "sfc" and the "/scannow" eg. sfc /scannow. The sfc command is the "system file checker" it's available in Win2k and XP, not sure about earlier versions though. BTW You need to be logged on as an administrator to run the sfc.

For the window size, just drag the four sides or two opposing corners out to the edge of the screen, close the window. When you reopen it, it should be in the new size.

Ding-dong - Unclean! Unclean!

Ran a virus scan and have a virus, 3 trojans and 2 worms. But I'm feeling better thanks. All are categorized low risk.

Unfortunately scf /scannow would not run even with the gap.

Hi,

i run spy stopper and spy remover, from download.com, excelent at sorting out the bugs.
but you still need to run a virus progam too.

If you right click on icon, select properties then where it says run, ensure it either says normal window or change it to maximise and see what happens.
Presume you've cleaned the virus and trojans etc.
You could try running in safe mode to access add/remove programs, or run "msconfig" and do a selective startup. to disable anything thats loading that you don't recognise
If your are running windows XP,( not sure if you can do this with ME)but you could do a system restore.

Also run Disk Cleanup (Accessories - System Tools) to empty temp folder and IE cache to delete temp internet files and cookies (Tools - Internet Options - Delete Cookies - Delete Files). Restart computer and try resizing again, holding down Ctrl key when you close the window.
