Hi I am thinking of buying the Navonics Boating App which around £38, my primary reason is to keep it on my iPad as a back up in case my chart plotter fails. I also want it for passage planning at home. I want to know is this one of the best or is there something better?

Thanks

Steve

Isn't the app free but you pay for the charts? I may be wrong.
Anyway, I found it easy to get on with but have recently taken up Maxsea Timezero because their charts look like Admiralty charts and I'm old fashioned that way.

There are a number of versions of the app. There is the free one, with in-app purchases for the various charts, or there are paid for versions that come "bundled" with charts. Depending on the coverage you're after, you may be better off with a paid-for version.

ie. The version with the Med charts is cheaper than the free version with all the Med charts bought in-app.

As for the Navionics app itself, I think it's great. Been using it since 2011 and very pleased with it. I use it to create routes on the iPad, which I then sync to my Raymarine chart plotter via WiFi. Much neater than creating routes on the plotter itself.

Had Navionics on iPhones and iPad mini since it first launched. Had to buy an updated version a couple of years ago. I have always found it easy to use and as accurate as my SH180i.

Also have and use the Navionincs app which I think was aboiut 15 quid. I think its brilliant and good value even though I only have it on my phone. If I bought a tablet (Android), would I be permitted to use it on that?

As a simple backup iPad app the Navionics is ideal. Also got Memory Map for Antares charts (which are great but can't run on Navionics), but much prefer the Navionics for occasional use

Thanks for the reply's I have down loaded the Navonics app, I only need maps to cover the south coast from Penzance to Dartmouth. Am I right is saying I will need to purchase the Uk and Ireland Maps? I have got a Raymarine C70 so can I do my passage planning at home and transfer it to my Plotter? if so how is this done.

Yes, I think the UK is a bundle. It's the Med that's broken down into smaller charts if you choose to buy them separately.
Sadly, I don't think you can sync your routes from Navionics to an older C70. You need to have one of the newer e/c series with built-in WiFi to sync routes/waypoints.

Very happy with Navionics, proved to be very accurate when playing amongst the rocks if N Brittany. Make sure that you load ALL the areas of the package asap, or you will be charged for doing so later.

Thanks for that I will make sure down load all areas, for around £38 it will make a good back up. I can also play with it at home

Where did you get that from? I've had the apps since ~2011 and have changed phones and downloaded the charts a few times, including new areas over the years. No extra charges.

You need the Navionics Mobile charts and the one you will need is UK & Holland. I do not think that there is any way to transfer data between the Navionics app and a conventional chart plotter.

That was a special deal you, me and a few others got. Nigel didn't and its turned him very sour about Navionics. We get unlimited free chart updates for life - or until they change the deal but frankly its worked out at £10 a year for complete chart updates - not bad eh? In a couple of years it will work out at £5 a year for that one off charge. My Raymarine plotter is £145 a year for chart updates just for the East/South coast - no wonder we love the free market economics the iPad brings.

I see that there is a significant price difference in the phone charts and the HD version for tablets, where it clearly says that HD version will not work on a phone, it doesn't say that phone version won't work on a tablet (android).
Is anyone running the lower cost version on an android tablet?

It can be done I think I used Astro file manager back it up to then install the back up copy on the tablet...
