I have picked up on of these from ebay but no manuals, does anyone know the connections for the wiring, there are 4, red, brown, green and white plus the screen.

Red - positive
Black - negative
White - NMEA out
Green - (could be) External beeper or light out, switched to ground, 30 V DC, 200 mA maximum
This is the wiring for my Navman 5500.

Go to the navman site and you can download the manual free. There is about sixty pages so make sure the printer is loaded

"Go to the navman site and you can download the manual free" Do you have a link, I have tried www.navmanmarine.net and there is no manual for the 1220A.
I am really not sure which wire to use for the 12v -ve as there is no black cable. It would be logical that +12v is red and that white is NMEA, that leaves me with brown, green and the screen.

On my 5500, brown is "power out 9v" - but it is not mentioned in the text, so I am not sure what it is on your GPS.
The shield on my 5500 is connected to negative/black. So that is probably your negative.
As I put above, give JGTech a call tomorrow. I believe he is quite knowledgeable, and the 1220A is advertised on his site.
