Hi does anyone use the Navionics charts on iPad and iPhone? I know as for as the iPad is concerned you need the GSM version. I don't have an iPad at the moment but I'm looking for a backup to my existing plotter and this package looks favourite at the moment.

Quite a few on here do use Navionics on IOS or other non fruit based devices. It’s very good, really works well with your existing MFD and will be a good back up, (unless your are relying on using it in bright sunlight).

IPad Pro with GPS is best as you can use it at the same time as say - google earth or your email or your web browser or anchor watch using multiple windows.

It’s great on the iPhone X and really, as back up, if you have one then give it a try before you buy a tablet. For planning a trip while sitting in a cafe and then sending it you your plotter when you’re BOB it’s great.

Regards

I purchased Navionics on my ipadonly to find out that it won’t work on my iphone...no one told me when I purchased (iPad HD) it wouldn’t work on my iPhone......so I’ll have to cancel my purchase and buy the lower res version on my iPhone.....I’m not happy they won’t give me an iPhone version...... interestingly the aircraft equivalent SkyDemon works on all platforms...........

Yep, works well on GSM iPad and my iPhone 7. I use it as my main Nav, also transfer to my plotter and to charts.

They are two different apps.
Even buying it twice, it’s still great value for the charts that you get.

It also works rather well in the window seat of an aircraft! :D

Many thanks, I guess you are right,I will purchase the iPhone app as well.
Can I up load to Garmin chart plotters, I can’t find this information?

I would hope so, didn’t Garmin acquire Navionics last year?

Just checked and it looks like no, I guess the garmin blue charts are not compatible. There was a garmin app that was available when I had the 5001 a few years ago, not sure if that’s still around. I imagine that things will change soon....

Have used for a number of years on iPad and works well provided you remember to download the right chart areas for intended cruising areas along French coast before you depart. As said a separate app is needed for iPhone but never been attracted to buy due to size of my iPhone screen . You might be best to put on iPad and try there and see if having on phone adds anything. Personally having a Raymarine plotter and a Garmin handheld the best use for iPad is home reasearch and sitting in local bars on arrival in foreign lands looking at options for the next few days if a change of plans is required.
Does anyone know if the iPad is plugged into a smart screen tv it impacts usage as if not presumably you could display from an iPhone app on a tv screen to enlarge in like fashion.

Thanks for all the feedback, I'll try it on my iPhone X before I buy an iPad, my plotter is a Standard Horizon with C maps so I'm sure it won't interface but i'm happy with that. I didn't know I'd have to buy it for each device but like was said earlier, it's still very good value.
Thanks again.

I think the iPhone version will work on the iPad with reduced definition. But the HD version for the pad will not work on the phone.

I am a Samsung user so have not tried this.

I have an iPad Air on which I put the Navionics charts. Works great. I later bought an iPhone 7 and found the app I’d bought for the iPad wouldn’t work on the phone. (Was told that if I’d bought the phone app it would have run on the iPad but not vice versa). Anyway, I tried it again on the phone last week, and it now works perfectly!? (Screen on the phone not really big enough to be very useful).

The app is great on the iPad, but make sure the iPad does have GPS.

Works great on my iPad Pro 10.5” and had it on my iPad Air before that. I use it as a backup and for passage planning. Only the GSM version has GPS but you don’t need a SIM card or data plan etc... to use it

I assume that the GMS version is the one with the SIM card and thus GPS. I made the mistake first time round. The position plot works but only by internet tethering or WI-FI when using Navionics
This iPad is now my fly remote in a permanent waterproof cover with WI-FI connection to the Raymarine
New iPad is now backup plotter with Navionics
Incidentally Lifeedge do a waterproof case through which iPad can be charged by opening a port and can be clipped into a swivel mount.
