I may be wrong but pretty certain I used to get position on the iPad without being connected to Wi-fi or tethered to the phone. Well, I don’t get any position at all now? Me, or changes to Navionics software?

Thanks Duncan though both myself and my wife are convinced the iPads used to work with the old Navionics apps. Neither has a SIM card slot. Oh well, back to the on board units.

Not quite correct, the iPads without SIM card do not have GPS chip so have to use WiFi to get approximate location, or tether to iPhone which of course do have GPS chip, unlike android tablets which many do have GPS chip

Yes any iPad which can take a sim will give a position on board without any wifi or Bluetooth ing to a mobile. Can track a lovely curve across the channel on the pad or watch your progress on red funnel if you prefer. Should work just as well on a plane etc if you wish but probably breaks some air regs.

Don’t assume the iPad tethered to an iPhone uses the phones gps position.

At the weekend I was in Bradwell Marina and my tethered iPad was showing me tucked up inside Tollesbury Marina on the other side of the Blackwater.

I’m typing this on my new iPad cellular...

I tether my I pad to a gps device and this seems to work well. We have a Garmin plotter in the nav station but no repeater in the cockpit so I find this useful. Looking at trying to fit a bracket for it now but I guess you have to keep it away from the compass. It will need a shade too as it’s not good in the sun.
