i'm sure ive chartered a boat with a rotary selector for the different light combos....does anyone know if there is a selector available and what are the options on a "normal" sailing boat:-

1: Off
2: Anchor Light
3: Mast All round Navigation Light
4: Deck Level Nav (sailing)
5: Deck Level Nav (+ mast steaming)

is that right? can i buy something off the shelf does anyone know?

I am doing mine at the mo with 5 simple switches ( with leds which show if they are switched on) mounted on one panel with labels, fed through one fuse.

My logic is that there maybe times when you want every light turned on (if only to test that they all work)

There are times you want non-preferred combinations. If stern light fails then an all round anchor light at top can stop you being run down. Your legal duty to your crew and other boats trumps anything else.

Any lights or sometimes lots of light are what you need in slow moving boat faced with rapidly approaching large vessels

I do seem to recall a charter boat whose panel had a representation of a yacht with LEDs that lit up indicate which nav lights were selected, but I don't remember what form the swtches took.
That is known as a "mimic" and pretty common - I had one on the custom panel I had made around 1997 for my Eventide. Also my soon to depart Bavaria has one, and guess what, I have just ordered one for the panel I am building for my GH.

Does not do what the OP wants anyway, although I have never seen a problem in selecting the right combination using individual switches.

Ah, but think of the fun you could have with the more complex lighting patterns: Helicopter operations from my stern, dredging for lost wallet, fishing for anchors, adrift & not under command &c.:ROFLMAO:
That lighting that alarmed me was a ship with massive white decklights and a red light showing dimly through it all. I thought it was across my path moving swiftly downtide across. As we neared I realised with horror it was a dredger anchored in our path, and I could now see a second red vertically above the first.

Still at least I could see it unlike the Berton stealth fishing fleet that only turned their lights on as we sailed through a fleet of six on a misty channel crossing
