After I refitted the alternator, I went for a run to test it and charge the batteries. Four miles later (on the trip reading,) I returned to the mooring and wrote up the log. On reading the Nasa total distance reading I got a figure of 7662 miles. Now I forgot to read it before I left. but at the end of the previous trip, it read 3026. The log is off when the batteries are off, and they were not only switched off but the earth lead was disconnected, so even if someone had nicked the boat for a quick shopping trip to Boston and back, the cumulative log reading should not have changed.
Actually this is not the first strange thing this year. The calibration number reset itself at one point leading to me thinking the boat had suddenly become faster. Any ideas on what has happened?
