I have recently acquired a rather old NASA AIS unit which seems to work fine although I am disappointed to find that the list of targets quotes their lat and long and IMO number but no name. I always thought that one would be able to contact the target by VHF if necessary. Have I got this wrong

You could call a target using the MMSI number. The Nasa AIS "Radar" is fairly basic, and only shows the nearest 24 targets.

Edit: I'd assumed you have a Nasa AIS "Radar", is that right?

If you have a NASA AIS Engine 1 you can upgrade it easily to version 3 by changing the processor chip

As I recollect, mine gives the name, but not immediately. It is broadcast less frequently.

Does it have a display? Or LEDs/no LEDs? If it has a display I don’t think you can do much about it.


However, if you call them on 01438354033 you’ll find them extremely helpful.

I have a nasa ais engine 2 upgraded to 3 by the chip swap and the names come up on my garmin chart plotter fine, as said it takes longer than the position and mmsi to show but does come up.

I also have a Nasa 2 and IIRC the ships name comes up as well as MMSI and position, CP is a Garmin Echo 70s.
If the OP has a 2 or 3 then maybe its a plotter thing.

My NASA AIS radar benefited from a more recent chip. Easy to change. The display shows the ship name.

NASA AIS Engine 2 upgraded to 3 with a 1cm long chip. Works fine, shows ship names but you have to be patient, takes time once you fire up.

Hey, guys, it looks like there are few people here who know a lot about the NASA AIS radar and could answer my question;
What data is is in the third column from the left? It displays either 1 digit number or a letter - usually "B" (could it be "class"?). Can't find any info about it in the manual. Thanks in advance.

Don't have a NASA AIS so no idea what the third column is, but class can be either A or B. Are the values always one of those? There shoudl be no delay in obtaining that info, unlike name, as it is inherent in the type of AIS message received.

Doesn't the manual refer to "navigation status symbol" and suggest that if you go to "Icons" it tells you what they mean?

Nop. There is nothing in the manual about it. The navigation symbols are in the second column and I have no problem with these.
