It was a James that conducted our Day Skipper Practical, the night exercise was in really quite bad conditions going up Loch Long, vis was down to a few hundred meters and keeping to the channel and out of the restricted zone while being watched by the patrol boat certainly kept us on our toes. The other candidate took us there just as it was getting dark and I took us back. To my great relief the transits and marks we had plotted before the voyage all worked out quite well. Then we got back to Helensburgh and the Navy had turned off some of the navigation buoys and marks, made an interesting last few minutes of the trip.
Next day we did the final full exercise which was going to be a circumnavigation of the Isle of Bute but due to the weather James told us to cut it short and just go to the narrows and then back to Rothsey, it had got rough enough from the start of storm Amy that Rothsey was shut. Still we came back at 22knots in a 1m following sea, that little boat is quite nice to helm, we finished up the day with ferry gliding around the marina which was fun and quite different to how my own boat handles.
All noted and v interesting. I don’t want to hijack the thread but I’m in Helensburgh this Friday/Saturday. I’m on the train up to Glasgow tomorrow morning. Old sailing area for me. We kept our boat on a mooring off Rhu for a few years. We used to haul out at Silvers in Risneath.

Back to photos I guess.

It looks like the south of France...but you need really good eyesight to see Africa
Just like the SoF, except it's dark, cold, grey , windy and probably raining if only we could could define mist and drizzle as rain.

Thanks @SaltIre (y) I use some of those old maps going over what has changed in the area
Dumbarton was where I was born.
Going back to 1735 my grt....great grandfather was an engineer at Denny's before it became Denny & Bros Shipyard, my father was a pattern maker there and my uncle was a marine architect specialising in engines and gearboxes
Today I was showing my wife around the area and had a lovely walk along the river and over the bridge to Levengrove Park.
Makes a change from last night at a ceilidh in Helensburgh which was fun in a different way :D
Renovations to the house are on hold so we are off sightseeing and then back to Belgium on Tuesday.
The Leven at Dumbarton as it used to be
