Does that weed ever cause a problem? Saw a bit of a programme about a chap on uk canals that had snags.
Oh yes, it does cause problems, on our last boat it would almost stop it, 100yds forward 50yds back to clear the weed and then 100yds forward, rinse and repeat.

On Hunter it is not so bad, only twice I had to go astern to clear the weed off the rudders and props, normally doing about 8-9km/h then it slowly drops off to 7km/h then getting towards 6km/h time to clear the baffles... then back up to 8km/h.

This year has been bad, good weather and no traffic as the rail bridge was reduced in hight to 3m so not many boats came along to keep the channel open, bridge was finished getting painted on 28th and today it was totally clear, the freight traffic is flowing again.

So…we are now back home…safely tied up. The thrusters are falling…the stern thruster is all but useless.
Had to do the old single engine dance with lock to lock steering to get the stern to line up in a tight berth.
There could be many causes
The build up of growth on the blades which is more than I expected so early…. I will purchase some wire brushes
Second is carbon dust….so I may have to take it apart to clean….a most unpleasant job in the heat and tight confines of the lazaret.
The other possibility is the brushes have worn…. I will order a new set right away…and not do any servicing until they arrive.
Tomorrow I will check to see if it is the batteries….that would be my happy place fix
And then it could be some other electrical components or a combination of all of the above
We love boats

For all who have been following my stern thruster maintenance story entwined within these pages…yesterday I tested the batteries and yes they are bad. So I ordered new batteries and hopefully that will help

You really should have started a new thread Bouba. Much more entertaining !
I ran a test thread in the lounge…entitled ´wire brush’
The feedback has been so sub par that I don’t think the forum is quite ready for the kind of excitement that comes with changing batteries…I’ll just stick to these casual updates 😃
