My sterndrive's buggered - help please

....bit of a thread drift if ever there was one but happy to oblige with a response;)

she's in a bit of a mood mate so not for a good while yet, I'm hoping for some time in 2013...

Apply a small portion of curry, then dose heavily with wine, I'm sure with a bit of manipulation normal operation will soon be restored.

thanks BM the 1st:D

Resourceful lots us boaty folk... cross bearings are coming out a treat with this method.. benefits of using a large adjustable spanner on the bearing cap end is the vice doesn't have to open so far and you can see the bearing cap coming through.. using a large socket obscures it. the large spanner is purely for leverage and the smaller socket obviously used to push the bearing through. no heating required, the extra pressure from the heavy duty vice is enough to push it through.

used to use this method..when i was training on the y.t.s scheme back in the day..!!:)
hope you get it fixed soon gary.
try soaking in oven cleaner.to brake up any crud, that might lock up the process..

SUCCESS!!!

The tools arrived 30 mins ago so have come off the work lappy to give them a quick go and boy what a difference!

Went for the most stubborn UJ that had bent the handle of the heavy duty vice and laughed in the face of the C Clamp / blow torch approach... Seriously, the thing was stuck big time but the combination of the C Press (substantial bit of kit, weighs a ton) and the Impact Driver pushed the UJ out the Yoke like a knife going through butter.. no stress on the Yoke at all.. Very impressed and will allow me to move the UJ Cross Bearings to and fro to hopefully, eventually, get the end caps orf.

Lesson learned that's been experienced so many times before.. stop fannying around trying to save a few pennies and get the right tools for the job Gary!!!:D

a bonus is the larger hole on the C Press is slightly wider than the hole in the yoke that the end cap goes in to... no need to mess around with sockets as the end cap isn't blocked by anything, it protudes out and through the C Press

Will take a video of the kit in use tonght.. work beckons

onwards and upwards

Should be but just need to co-ordinate a few things with my work and footy to get the Gimbal Bearing replaced... not out the woods yet with the UJ's... going to source some once I've identified the exact type and these end caps are still playing hard to get.. That said, it's all going in that direction now... Trim Tab actuator is sorted and I've found the fault for the inoperative speedo so when she goes back in, all should be back to working as it should be:cool:

Yup, its all about juggling!! Good luck

I think (hope) we have identified issue with my leaky gearbox, if correct just an O ring within the shaft coupling and a small job to replace which Paul (volvopaul) is doing next week.... so fingers crossed!

Thanks Steve!

We went down (against all forecast wisdom) on Saturday (even took the dog as we were not going anywhere), yes we had a few showers sat pm but then the sun would come out and dry everything off again. Didn't go anywhere but had a relaxing time, great weather Sunday am. We packed up about 1.30pm and as we did it started to rain, drove home up the A3 with great views of some lightening storms!

Couple of points of vague interest.

1. Dog spotted this, peering over the side she got all excited, so looked myself and a massive shoal of grey mullet. Now there are always lots of grey mullet around and often there are 3 or 4 in a group, but I kid you not to say that the shoal spread from one set of pontoons to the other, it was almost as if you could walk across them... there were thousands...!!

2. Mercury is starting to fill up a bit, not so many gaps as there were last year..

3. When you have a dog lying on the pontoon many more people speak to you...

Oh, and BTW, can't believe you are missing bank holiday, for godsake Steve, make sure you book 4&5th June off!!

As you know, I meant Deb :)

thanks:cool: next challenge is getting the cas off the UJ's my cheap pair of mole grips aren't cutting it so going to buy a pair of Irvin Vice Grips later today and get them out with those hopefully... determined to get the UJ's out today so I can make progress getting the drive put back together.

Will likely be down this weekend if you fancy a beer

I think this whole "my outdrive is buggered" is just an excuse to buy tools. :D

lols... I have a garage full of them for that very reason... bit of a cock up tonight actually.. put the end of Cross Bearing stem through the end of one of the caps as I'd not aligned the C Press up perfectly so it compressed against the press when pushed through, in fact, some of the surfaces of the UJ are at an angle which invites the clamp to slip a little... got the cross bearing out in the end but the insides of the cap are still in the holder had to chamfer off a sliver of metal from the end of a cross bearing stem with an angle grinder to get it out though as the casing from the cap got in the way.

Cracking on with getting the other caps off and will then focus my attention/wallet on buying another tool to get rid of the reminents of the cap.:D

pleased with progress so far and should hopefully have everything ready to rebuild by tomorrow and will do so when the new cross bearings arrive.

having a little break as I was getting in to the employ a BFH mindset with one of the bearing caps, will the bugga shift? will it 'eck:rolleyes:

moving the caps back and forth with increasing amounts of 3-in-1 oil seems to work eventually
