Hardly called for. I don't think JD has been unpleasant to or about OP. He seems to take a slightly jaundiced view of her motives and her way of going about things but it's a perfectly valid point of view. I think he's contributed quite a lot to this thread.

Thank you. I don't know how often I have to say that I really hope all this works out well for the OP.

Well, the weather seems to be holding everyone back these past few weeks..

Jumble, webcraft of this very parish did a rather useful write up of their round Ireland trip..
Which way are you thinking of going?

The hand sounds a ( temp) bummer.
I have fixed GRP stuff under a tarpaulin 'tent' with fan heater and thermometer, if that helps at all?

Probably anticlockwise. The boat lives on the Clyde and I live in SW Scotland, so I may try to get her down here first and then set off down the Irish Sea a bit later. All very weather dependent, though.

Interesting medical fact: if you trip over a low wall at night and put out your dominant hand to save yourself, you can bend all the fingers back through 135 degrees. Once.

Lots of possibilities when the weather improves, and I have plenty to do till then. My DS comes back from the welder's tomorrow[1], so I have Fun With French Electrics ahead.

[1] Not on a low-loader.

Ahem I was having too much fun and then crashed my ( second) posh fold up bike some years ago.. I still have bike no3 but the tendon /elbow physio would have bought ( mebbe) bike no4.
But it was a ver ver ver bloody marvellous night
Best luck , nice to have a proper summer aim, we're all going a tad stir crazy p'haps this month..

Gosh, I'm down at the boat fighting with the steering system for a single day and the thread gains another 8 pages or so!

However, I wished to reply to the below comment...

It is interesting how ready so many old men have been to heap abuse on a young woman they have never met.

Could it be be that they are saddened and embittered by the certain knowledge that no young woman would look twice at them without a shudder of revulsion, and that the nearest they are likely to get to a young woman is drooling over one of Lakesailor's photos of naked girls young enough to be their daughters or granddaughters?
Although I wish Ellie all the best in her endeavours, however she goes about it, I would probably be lumped in with the nay sayer crowd for querying why she was given free loot for a boat she is going to live on in a marina?

Though, as for the above descriptors: Although the years are passing quicker and quicker, I wouldn't yet describe myself as an old man (not long to go, though!). The above quote doesn't specify an age range for "young", however a later post mentioned "in their 20s". My Mrs is in her 20s (and no, there isn't a ludicrous age gap) and I'd like to think she doesn't have feelings of revulsion when she looks at me!
As for being jealous because she's doing something that one wishes they'd done in their youth. Take a gander at my signature - Living the dream!

So, I don't believe any "negative" posts on here are as a result of being old, jealous, lusting for their youth, lecherous, or anything like that. It's simply a query as to why should she get a free lunch?

As for leveraging the interest of this forum to make money (or gain sponsorship), have people forgotten how Nostradamus was chased off this very forum when the suggestion was made that he was going to make money writing a book with some information gleaned from here? But I guess he's a 50 something, flatulent man with bad teeth, so why should he benefit from this forum?!

An interesting question. Is there a caveat? Why should she get a free lunch instead of me? Why should she get a free lunch at all? There is an old addage, 'there is no such thing as a free lunch'

Good luck to her. If she can get stuff donated, then good for her. Her getting stuff is not going to effect my life in any way. Fair winds people.

I said good luck to her when she told us about her freebies. I'd be interested to know whether the donor companies now think their involvement was worthwhile.

My sense is that this thread may have somewhat overplayed the "sponsorship" thing. In reality manufacturers routinely distribute freebies, I even got a free bottle of champagne from Waitrose at Christmas!

Product endorsement, such as Bono's LVMH advertising campaign, is another matter; endorsement agreements must navigate all sorts of legal, regulatory, commercial and reputational considerations which collectively determine how the “brand” wishes to use its celebrity “brand ambassador”. None of this applies in this case.

The "sponsors" will simply "feel the buzz", most of which has occurred on this thread! ...will almost certainly recoil from the negative vibe and will note that their supposedly "media savvy" recipient has completely lost control.

At that point they will simply withdraw from doing anything more, unless the OP can somehow "phoenix" the project from the ashes. Even then I suspect irreparable damage has been done.

Innuendos such as these will put the sponsors off more so than Ellie's silence I'm sure

Why wouldnt they

They give out the stuff for media exposure, not because they think that someone living on an old fishing boat is an essentially worthwhile project. An eighth of a page in PB costs £672, so a few fenders or an anchor or even a GPS in exchange for a few plugs in a five page article is a pretty good deal.

However, it does rather depend on the article appearing. Likewise, if stuff is given in return for plugs on a blog and on forums the recipient really has to do some work on promotion. Accepting the freebies and then b*gg*ring off doesn't look good. Mind you, this thread is certainly grabbing attention, so we may all be doing the OP a favour with her clients by keeping it going.

No postings or updates anywhere for a month and no contact with Preston marina for weeks, even when they have been offering a more affordable launch option. It doesn't exactly sound like a project in the best of health, does it?

For those who have enjoyed this thread, there is an even bigger one on Sailing Anarchy in a smilar vein.

Nothing has happened there for ages either, but that hasn't stopped the posting.

The launch saga was even juicier as it allegedly involved the boat owner trying to bite off the finger of the HM. It is California after all rather than just Lancashire.

Not sure about the project but it seems likely the project lead isn't in the best of health given the evidence.

I believe that could be the case. Ive said before on this thread that I know Ellie & have e-mailed her a number of times since
she stopped posting, but without reply. She is a nice young lass & I can only wish her well & a speedy return.

I don't know nor does anyone so why write it off prematurely - not you Jumble by the way - on the whole your musings are a lot fairer than others'

I am finding it increasingly difficult to believe that somebody with a lifetime of cyber connections and contacts can simply have evaporated.

There is somebody out there who knows of her welfare and what is going on. Frankly, I don't really care what is going on but to allow people to speculate over health matters is, erm, unhealthy and perhaps a little sick.

Sometimes the analogy of a cat playing with a mouse comes to mind.

I followed that thread for a while last year - fascinating stuff, everyone said it would sink in a week - still afloat I see!
