Having now got very fed up with this thread, could somebody please be kind enough to make an announcement elsewhere on the site when something of interest has happened.

I regretting looking at this each and every time I do, thereby getting frustrated AND logging another VIEW to a thread which is going absolutely no-where!

Thanks in advance.

Aha, you have indeed discovered how 'Viral' works..

how to avoid a social media disaster ...........

http://connect.icrossing.co.uk/avoid-social-media-disaster_7167

QUOTE: Whilst catching up with my favourite technology and digital marketing blogs, I often read disaster stories about how brands have failed to respond to activity on their social media pages and profiles in a positive way. Great fun to read and food-for-thought, but not the inspiring anecdotes we all look for.

Dropped the ball on this one Ellie !

Blagger I think is the best word.
Ra Ra Ra, make lots of excited noises, clap hands, im important, look at me, facebook, twitter, ra ra ra, i must be important i wrote a book, look at my hair and dippy hippy clothes, im important, i havent grown up yet, jump up and down and clap hands, ooh arent i cute, and so it goes on!

Harsh, but not unfair ;)

My sentiments exactly! Besides, if they ever do lift the thing it will probably hog itself or open up so much it'll go straight to the bottom. She's bought a turkey and will probably abandon it where it is ... the people she bought it from must be laughing their seaboots off! Haven't those of us who've been around for a while seen it all before? I can remember in the 60s serving a writ on a boat in Falmouth - nailed it to the mast ... it was tied up in between Falmouth and Penryn in what we used to call 'Dead boat creek' .... reading about this 'orrible looking old tore-out brought back some memories!

I'm genuinely gobsmacked by this thread (and the others spawned from it) now.

Yes, the OP would appear to have made some genuine, but large, oversights on the costs involved. I also think she could have handled the Preston Marina thing differently, however I don't see anything that scathing that makes me think she's really overstepped the mark. I agree the radio silence probably doesn't help her cause one bit, but for all people know there may be a very good, or potentially serious reason for it. Or she may be demonstrating a level of maturity far above the level that many seem to operate at in this thread, leaving you lot to it while she slowly gets her boat in the water.

Instead we seem to have a playground mentality here, people rummaging around the archives of the internet looking for "dirt". FFS it's from 7 years ago, I'm sure we all had some pretty stupid "get rich quick" ideas when were 18. At least it's legal.

We now have a bunch of nameless, faceless keyboard warriors, attacking pretty much every facet of her character and even her appearance, some of it really quite innapproapriate to be honest. I'm quite convinced that many people will be far happier if the whole project gets abandoned, the boat sinks, and the sponsors ask for their kit back, rather than reading about what is potentially an interesting story about an old boat, just so you can sit there and say "told you so...and if I don't get free anchors, why should you?"

Grow up, accept that someobody may have had their fingers burnt by a bit of youthful over enthusiasm and a lack of life experience, and that pathetic playground comments add zero value. Or if you just want to throw insults at someone you've never met, try Sailing Anarchy, the lounge, or perhaps someone who isn't a fellow boater. I would chuckle to myself if one day the only thing that stood between some of the posters on here and a lee shore was a towline from Elizmor.

The Severn Iris, an Historic Ship, has been a houseboat on the Duddon estuary for some years http://www.nationalhistoricships.org.uk/register/2483/severn-iris

Very well said. You sum up my sentiments exactly.

I think it's really sad that a young person who is trying something a little different should be subject to this barrage of bile.

She may have a lot to learn, but who didn't in their twenties? (and thirties / forties / fifties, etc). I hope she navigates her way through all her hassles and has a life full of adventures, which will include I'm sure, her share of set backs.

But at least when her grandkids say "Granny, what did you do with your life" she might have a more to say than some on here who will only be able to reply "I sat on my arse and poured bitter scorn on others as a way of compensating for my own shortcomings".

I'd like to think none of us make a full time job of "sitting on our arses pouring bitter scorn on others..." - The reason for my cynicism is that when things are all sunshine, roses, hopes and dreams, Ellie is all over social media like a cheap suit. When reality bites and things aren't so good, it all goes strangely quiet. I have certainly had enough successes (and failures) to not count myself as an "arse-sitter", but unlike Ellie I chose to keep them to myself...I don't get the applause, but equally I don't get the "barrage of bile" either. As someone said earlier, if you live by the sword...

I do wonder what the response would be like if Ellie were a 50-something man rather than a 20-something woman?

To anyone seeking SAIL inspiration on what you can achieve with very little ( and a lot of effort), the writings of Captain 'Fatty' Goodlander just might be worth a peek. On Amazon.

A phrase of his I remember ''Beware the dream crushers...''

I am interested in the "standing on one leg" principles, if we look at Elzimor on the Hard (Pic on her website) she is supported both sides and front and rear by supports with very little surface area, the whole weight of the boat is therefore on a very small piece of Quay, wouldn't a well balanced crane spread less load per sq meter ?

Almost certainly, but the crane operator (or more accurately, their insurer) will want something more concrete (sorry ;)) before they commit to the lift.

People are repeatedly missing the point here. Whilst the boat standing on her keel or even the truck delivering counterweights are not at risk of having a calamitous toppling accident with all the attendant problems and damage. Once the boat is lifted up and the transfer is underway the main risk is undertaken. That is what the insurance is to cover. All the various responsibilities and liabilities should anything go wrong.
Nothing much is going to go wrong with a boat sitting on the hard.
If the hard were to collapse with the boat sat upon it the worst that may happen is that it would tilt over a bit. If the hard were to collapse under the pad of a crane during the lift the consequences could be enormous.
The survey is to manage that risk. Not to prove the ground is probably capable.

Yerbut, the next thing would be to stand a, say 100kg weight on a small point, say 10mm sided square. 1000 tons/sq metre. Meaningless.
