How much fuel would she burn during the journey?

how long would it take?

Here's a very wild guess, based on no knowledge of either these engines, nor old fishing boats:

Preston to Brighton (direct...no detours for weather, problems or fun) is about 600 miles.

Is 8 knots sensible? Is 5.5 gph sensible? Is £1.40 per litre sensible?

If so, I make it 75 hours running time, therefore 412.5 gallons, which 1875 litres, which costs about £2625 ish.

Roughly!!!

she may be young, but if she has sunk all her money and maybe borrowings into this project and she cannot make it pay off, then that could be life-changing. It's a horrible situation to be in.

Bloody hell Lil get a grip thats hardly life changing being told you have type1 diabetes or cancer that's life changing .

brave boy

is that right then chaps?

and what would be the costs involved if the engine started losing compression in one of the cylinders, or developed a bit of a crank knock.

Are compressors involved anywhere

I have no kidea

as I am writing I sit six feet from a two cylinder lump and I am terrified about the magnitude of the financial licking it could give me.

Err, :ambivalence: could she (the MFV) be put on Ebay to sell her ASAP and let a lot of people 'get a life' again :)

Poss a local buyer might find Her (the MFV) more suitable to their needs and indeed, if local, a lot cheaper to get to a home berth :)

I look forward to a new posting titled - My new project MFV ................

Rule of thumb 20hp per gallon per hour. Gardners renowned for being frugal, we used to laugh when fuel was 1p per litre. About 100 hp to send her along at 7 kts.

600 miles, 86 hours, 430 gallons, the above estimate seem a fair one.

I own a boat called Shemaron a 1949 ringnetter, im happy to see anyone trying to keep one of these boats going, there have been some terrible comments and speculation on this forum i think it would be best to stop at least untill some facts are known ,

I sense a sponsorship opportunity for Shell or BP in the offing............................:highly_amused:

Good suggestion!

In 1996, whilst gale bound in Milford Haven in our old wooden gaff cutter, we lay alongside the beautiful steamship 'Carolla'.

She was sponsored by Scottish coal (and passed over a lump or two for our solid fuel stove: I've never known coal that gave so much heat....must have been very special stuff).

What a nasty little man you are.

What on earth has she has done to you to prompt such an outpouring of hatred?

I've said it before on here, and I'll repeat it for your benefit, there's something badly wrong with your mind.

No hatred matey just a view of the facts. By the way, think on about your little outburst!
At least Ive got the ba lls to put stuff in my profile!

You could do it on a lowloader for that?

No detail on Stus page that I could see. As a seasoned local politico I am sure he is absolutely aware of the nuances of using inflammatory language .Eh boyo? ( that is an unwelcome, unhelpful and unnecesary example btw), with a bit of stereotypicalusation, as 'wanna buy an Eber off a van mate?' ( Another one) Stu used by aligning one hapless pair of tired old MFVs to the OPs rather different, surveyed, paid up, beautifully converted, worked on, example, with qualified skipper to boot!
Whilst I am in admiration of Stus community efforts in local politics, I too wonder at the personal nature of his post-is there something we don't know Stuart? I shink we shud be told!

And moving on , a nice link to Gardner engines, some thermal efficiency and long legged rugged frugality I believe. But read it fer yerselves guys!

And finally, a thought: of those who so casually post unpleasantness here on this very thread, how many of your wives are aware of it I wonder ? We have had very few ( any) women posters POVs afaik..? Anyone
